Why British Airways Avios are worth what they are
Avios held in The British Airways Club, the program's name since its 2025 relaunch, are valued at 1.1 to 1.4 cents each in September 2026. The wide spread is the point: Avios are excellent for short partner flights and for transatlantic awards routed through Iberia or Aer Lingus, and poor for long-haul awards on British Airways itself, where carrier surcharges can exceed the cash price of an economy ticket.
Avios are the most accessible airline currency for US cardholders. American Express, Chase, Capital One, Citi, Bilt and Wells Fargo all transfer in, usually with several bonuses a year, and balances can be moved freely to Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair. That flexibility means there is rarely a reason to keep a large idle balance in the program.
