The Avianca LifeMiles program explained
LifeMiles is the loyalty program of Avianca, the Colombian airline and Star Alliance member, and is run by LifeMiles Ltd., a Bermuda company wholly owned by Avianca Group International. Its miles are earned and redeemed on Avianca and the 25 other Star Alliance airlines, and GOL, Iberia and Avianca codeshares operated by Clic also earn miles. Within Abra Group, which brings Avianca and GOL together, LifeMiles sits alongside GOL's Smiles.
LifeMiles had 16 million members at the end of 2025, up more than 14%, and Abra says loyalty members make up about 41% of Avianca's passengers. For US members the program is best known as a transfer partner of Capital One, Citi ThankYou, Bilt and Marriott Bonvoy, and through the avianca lifemiles American Express cards that Cardless issues.
The program is hard to read from outside: lifemiles.com loads only in a browser, its old award chart page is empty, and the price of an award appears only in the flight search. Most rules have to be checked inside the account before points are moved in.

How members earn Avianca LifeMiles
- Flying Avianca and the other Star Alliance airlines, plus GOL, Iberia and Clic-operated codeshares; you must be a member before the flight, and a missing flight can be claimed for up to 12 months.
- Transfers from Capital One and Bilt at 1:1 and Marriott Bonvoy at 3:1 (without Marriott's usual 5,000-mile bonus). Citi lists LifeMiles as a ThankYou partner at a rate that depends on the card, and American Express does not list its partners on a public page we could read.
- The avianca lifemiles American Express Card ($99) and Elite Card ($249) from Cardless, which earn 2 or 3 miles per dollar on Avianca and LifeMiles purchases and include LifeMiles Silver status.
- More than 340 commercial partners, gift codes and the LifeMiles+ subscription. LifeMiles also sells miles directly, and Biirdee reports bonus sales that bring the price to roughly 1.3 cents a mile.
Best ways to use Avianca LifeMiles
- Star Alliance and Avianca awards searched together on lifemiles.com, which books one-way, round-trip and multi-city itineraries.
- Avianca award sales in the special offers section; LifeMiles' 2024 US sale priced Miami to San Salvador at 5,550 miles and Miami to Cartagena at 6,060.
- Redeeming with a US co-brand card: the Elite Card returns 10% of the miles on Star Alliance awards and takes up to 25% off Avianca awards, and the standard card takes 5% off Avianca awards booked on lifemiles.com.
- Business class upgrades with miles on Avianca and Star Alliance flights, and elite family pooling, which moves miles free within a group of up to seven family members.
What to watch out for
- LifeMiles publishes no award chart or fee table on a readable page, and its terms load only in its app, so prices and rules have to be checked in the search before points are transferred.
- Miles expire after a period without account activity: 18 rolling months in the rules BAC Credomatic publishes for its LifeMiles cards. US Cardless cardholders keep their miles as long as they use the card.
- Refunding an Avianca award costs US$30 to US$100 depending on the fare, only awards issued within the last year qualify, and a partly flown ticket can change only its date or time. Miles + Money awards are refunded in miles, not cash.
- A 2024 LifeMiles sale page listed a ticket issue charge of US$25 to US$80 per round trip plus local taxes; no current fee schedule is published on a readable page.

Status is earned over the calendar year (January 1 to December 31, 2026 for the current cycle) from qualifying miles, part of which must come from Avianca-operated flights or services bought from Avianca; the thresholds are shown only in the lifemiles.com account. Red Plus and Silver give Star Alliance Silver, Gold and Diamond give Star Alliance Gold, Diamond members can request business class upgrades as a status benefit, and both US Cardless cards include Silver.
Should you sell your Avianca LifeMiles?
Keep your miles if you fly Avianca or Star Alliance often enough to keep the account active, hold a US co-brand card whose use stops them expiring, or have already priced an award in the lifemiles.com search. Elite members can also pool miles within the family at no cost.
Consider selling if the balance came from a one-off trip or an old transfer and nothing is planned to keep the account active, since miles lapse after a period without activity, or if you want a value you can check in advance, which LifeMiles makes difficult by publishing no chart.

Avianca's help centre tells members to search the Flights section of lifemiles.com to see how many miles each route costs, and LifeMiles' former award chart page (lifemiles.com/eng/inc/starredawards.aspx) now loads empty, so every itinerary, on Avianca or a Star Alliance partner, has to be priced in the search. Whether partner awards still follow a fixed table behind the search cannot be checked on any page LifeMiles publishes.
