The Air France-KLM Flying Blue program explained
Flying Blue is the joint loyalty program of Air France and KLM, and also serves Transavia and a set of smaller partners. Both airlines are founding members of SkyTeam, so miles can be redeemed on Delta, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, China Airlines and other alliance carriers, as well as on non-alliance partners such as Etihad and Qantas.
Flying Blue is one of the most accessible programs for US cardholders: American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou Points, Bilt, Wells Fargo and Marriott Bonvoy all transfer in. Awards are priced dynamically but within published ranges, and the monthly Promo Rewards discount seats to and from selected cities by 25 percent or more.

What to watch out for
- Awards carry surcharges, typically modest on economy but a few hundred dollars on long-haul business class; the Flex reward tier introduced on September 8, 2026 halves the surcharge but costs far more miles.
- Pricing is dynamic, so peak dates and last-minute bookings cost far more than the advertised starting prices.
- Since May 4, 2026 the whole balance expires 24 months after the last earning activity for Explorer members; elite members, Flying Blue credit cardholders and minors are exempt.

Status is earned through Experience Points (XP) from flights on Air France, KLM and SkyTeam partners, and it renews on a rolling 12-month cycle. Silver corresponds to SkyTeam Elite and Gold and above to SkyTeam Elite Plus.
Should you sell your Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles?
Keep your miles if you travel between North America and Europe, especially if you can watch for Promo Rewards or fly in business class on Air France and KLM. Flying Blue is one of the better-value transferable-currency destinations for that route.
Consider selling if your balance is large and idle, if you have no Europe trips planned, or if the account is approaching the 24-month inactivity limit. Because Flying Blue miles are easy to replace by transferring from a bank program later, holding a large balance in the program carries little benefit.
