The Air Canada Aeroplan program explained
Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada, Canada's flag carrier and a founding member of Star Alliance, with hubs in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Relaunched in 2020 with a new award chart and no fuel surcharges, Aeroplan has become one of the most popular programs among North American points collectors.
Its appeal comes from breadth: Aeroplan points transfer in from nearly every major US and Canadian credit card program, and they book more than 45 partner airlines, including non-Star carriers such as Emirates, Etihad and Air Serbia.

Best ways to use Air Canada Aeroplan points

- Stopovers: adding a stopover to a one-way award costs a small fixed number of points, making two-destination trips cheap.
- Awards on unusual partners, including Emirates and Etihad, which are otherwise hard to book with points.

What to watch out for
- Aeroplan points expire after 18 months without activity, though any earning or redemption resets the clock and holders of an Aeroplan credit card or elite status are exempt. Air Canada paused expiry and resumes it on November 30, 2026.
- Air Canada-operated flights are priced dynamically, so the fixed chart applies mainly to partners, and since January 2026 points on Air Canada tickets are earned per dollar spent rather than by distance.
- A booking fee applies to partner awards, and award changes carry fees unless you hold status.
