The British Airways Club program explained
The British Airways loyalty program, known as the Executive Club until it became The British Airways Club on April 1, 2025, uses Avios as its currency. Avios are shared with Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair, and can be moved between those programs, which makes the balance unusually flexible. British Airways is a founding member of oneworld, so Avios book American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qantas and other partners as well.
Avios are among the easiest currencies to accumulate for US members: American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou Points, Bilt, Wells Fargo and Marriott Bonvoy all transfer in, and Chase issues a co-branded card. The trade-off is that redemptions on British Airways itself carry heavy surcharges.

How members earn British Airways Club Avios
- Flying British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and oneworld partners, with Avios earned by fare class and distance.
- Transfers from American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou Points, Bilt and Wells Fargo Rewards, usually at 1:1.
- The British Airways Visa Signature card from Chase, plus frequent transfer bonuses of 20 to 40 percent from the bank programs.
- The Avios eStore shopping portal, BA Holidays, and the ability to combine Avios with household members.
Best ways to use British Airways Club Avios
- Short and medium-haul partner flights priced by distance, such as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines domestic routes that start at 7,500 to 9,000 Avios one way.
- Moving Avios to Iberia or Aer Lingus for transatlantic business class with far lower surcharges than British Airways adds.
- Qatar Airways Qsuite awards booked through the British Airways site or by moving Avios to Privilege Club.
- Reward Flight Saver fares within Europe, where surcharges are capped at a low fixed amount.
What to watch out for
- Long-haul awards on British Airways itself carry surcharges that can exceed the cash price of an economy ticket, especially from London.
- Avios are priced by distance and cabin, so multi-connection itineraries cost more than a single direct flight.
- Avios expire after 36 months without any earning or spending activity on the account.

Since April 2025, tier points come from spending with British Airways at one tier point per pound of eligible fare and carrier charges, with bonuses by fare type added in April 2026. Bronze needs 3,500 tier points, Silver 7,500 and Gold 20,000; Bronze corresponds to oneworld Ruby, Silver to Sapphire and Gold to Emerald.
Should you sell your British Airways Club Avios?
Keep your Avios if you fly short-haul partner routes, can route transatlantic awards through Iberia or Aer Lingus, or want access to Qatar Airways Qsuite. Avios remain one of the most flexible currencies for those uses.
Consider selling if most of your travel is long-haul on British Airways, where surcharges eat much of the value, if your balance is far bigger than your plans, or if your account is at risk of the 36-month expiry.
