The Lufthansa Miles & More program explained
Miles & More is the loyalty program of the Lufthansa Group, covering Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Discover Airlines, and it is the largest frequent flyer program in Europe. Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, so miles can be redeemed on United, Air Canada, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and the rest of the alliance.
For US members the program is hard to fund: no US bank program transfers in, Marriott Bonvoy dropped Miles & More from its list, and the co-branded US card has limited reach. That scarcity is also why the program has a following, because Lufthansa releases first class award seats to its own members earlier than to partners.

How members earn Lufthansa Miles & More miles
- Flying Lufthansa Group airlines and Star Alliance partners, with miles earned by fare class and, on Lufthansa Group tickets, by fare paid.
- The Miles & More co-branded credit cards in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and a US Mastercard.
- No US bank or hotel program currently transfers to Miles & More, so US members earn mainly through the co-branded Mastercard and flying.
- Lufthansa WorldShop, partner hotels, car rentals and Payback in Germany.
Best ways to use Lufthansa Miles & More miles
- Lufthansa First Class and the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt, which members can book at 15 days out or more while partners typically get seats only in the last two weeks.
- Star Alliance partner awards, which are still priced from a fixed chart even though Lufthansa Group flights went dynamic in June 2025.
- Intra-Europe economy and business awards, which remain reasonably priced and easy to find.
- Upgrade awards on Lufthansa Group flights for members holding paid economy or premium economy tickets.
What to watch out for
- Miles & More adds substantial surcharges to awards on Lufthansa Group airlines, often several hundred dollars on long-haul business class.
- Since June 3, 2025, awards on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and the other group airlines are priced dynamically, and premium cabin prices on popular dates have risen sharply.
- Miles expire 36 months after they are earned, at the end of the quarter, unless you hold Frequent Traveller status or above or, in some countries, a qualifying co-branded credit card.

Status is earned through Points and Qualifying Points from flights on Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance airlines: 650 Points for Frequent Traveller, 2,000 for Senator and 6,000 HON Circle Points for the top tier. Frequent Traveller maps to Star Alliance Silver, Senator and HON Circle to Star Alliance Gold, and holding status stops miles from expiring.

Consider selling if your miles are approaching the 36-month expiry, if you would rather book Star Alliance awards through a cheaper program such as United or Aeroplan, or if you simply have more miles than travel plans.
