How members earn Virgin Australia Velocity points

• Virgin Australia flights: 4 points per $1 spent for Red members since 2 April 2025, or 5 with an eligible credit card, rising to 6 for Silver, 7 for Gold and 8 for Platinum. Reward Seats earn nothing.
• Partner flights by distance and fare class on Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, United, ANA, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic and others; Singapore Airlines pays 0.5 to 2 points per mile (rates dated November 2022).
• Transfers from more than 50 eligible cards issued by banks including American Express, ANZ, Citi, NAB and Westpac, from Commonwealth Bank's Yello rewards from 1 October 2026, and from Marriott Bonvoy (3:1 with 5,000 bonus points per 60,000), Hilton, IHG, Choice, Accor and Shangri-La.
• Family Pooling moves every newly earned point from up to five family members at the same address into one beneficiary's account, and Family Points Transfers move 5,000 to 125,000 points up to four times a year.

Best ways to use Virgin Australia Velocity points

• Short Virgin Australia domestic Reward Seats from 5,900 points one way, the lead-in price since 17 October 2024.
• United business class between the US West Coast and Australia at 102,000 points one way; the same distance band costs 113,000 on Air Canada or ANA and 119,500 on Singapore Airlines or Qatar Airways.
• Virgin Atlantic or United across the Atlantic: 51,500 points in business and 23,500 in economy one way for 2,401 to 3,600 miles, which covers New York to London.
• Converting points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 1.55 to 1, useful while Velocity itself cannot book Singapore Airlines First class.

What to watch out for

• Membership is open only to people who live in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Christmas Island or the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (terms, clause 2.1).
• Points expire 24 months after the last earning or redemption, and since the terms effective 17 August 2026 receiving pooled or family-transferred points keeps a balance alive for only a month.
• Changing or cancelling a Reward Seat costs 4,500 points or $35 per person on domestic flights and 7,500 points or $60 on international and partner flights, must be done 24 hours before departure, and nothing comes back once travel has started.
• Partner awards carry taxes and carrier charges, up to US$215 on Singapore Airlines, and the partner list shrinks as well as grows: Hawaiian Airlines left on 1 July 2025.

Since 1 October 2025 status needs Status Credits alone, with at least half from Virgin Australia flights: Silver 250 (125 on Virgin Australia), Gold 500 (250), Platinum 1,000 (500) and Platinum Plus 2,000 (1,500), retained at 200, 400, 800 and 2,000. Forever Gold takes 12,000 lifetime credits, 9,000 of them on Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia fares earn 1 Status Credit per $12 (per $24 on Lite), the balance counts the previous 365 days, and Gold benefit periods starting on or after 1 October 2025 no longer include guaranteed Economy Reward Seats.
