United MileagePlus elite status explained

United Premier status has four earnable tiers, Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K. Each is reached in a calendar year either on Premier qualifying points (PQP) alone, from 6,000 for Silver to 28,000 for 1K, or on a lower PQP total combined with Premier qualifying flights (PQF), and every route needs at least 4 flights operated by United or United Express.

PQP are essentially dollars: United flights earn 1 PQP per US dollar of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges. Chase United credit cards also earn PQP, up to 28,000 a year on the United Club cards, and card PQP count toward every tier up to and including Premier 1K, including its PQP-only route.

Your redeemable MileagePlus miles are a separate balance: they never expire and they do not count toward Premier status.

MileagePlus miles are what you spend on award flights, upgrades and more, and United announced in 2019 that they no longer expire. PQP and PQF are status counters only and decide which Premier tier you hold.

Since tickets bought on or after 2 April 2026, how many redeemable miles a United flight earns depends on both your tier and whether you hold a United card. United's own examples: a General member with no card earns a third of what a General member paying with a United Explorer card earns (9 miles per dollar in total), a General member paying with a United Club card earns 11, a Premier Gold paying with a United Quest card 13, and a Premier 1K paying with a United Club card 17.

Worked example: a Premier Gold who buys a $400 United ticket with a Quest card earns 5,200 redeemable miles (13 per dollar). The flight itself earns 1 PQP for each dollar of base fare and carrier surcharges, so just under 400 PQP once taxes are taken out, plus 20 PQP from the card (1 PQP per $20 spent), and 1 PQF. Those PQP move you toward the next tier but can never be redeemed.

The qualification year is the calendar year, 1 January to 31 December. Status is valid from the day you qualify to the end of the next program year, and United says status reached in 2026 will not expire until 31 January 2028. Chase deposits the Quest card's annual bonus PQP within 8 weeks of 1 February each year.

Benefits of each United MileagePlus tier

Premier Silver

Earn 6,000 PQP, or 5,000 PQP plus 15 PQF, between 1 January and 31 December. At least 4 of your flights must be operated by United or United Express.

  • Premier cardholders save at least 15% on United flight awards, against at least 10% for General cardholders
  • Complimentary Premier Upgrades on select United and United Express flights
  • Complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets too when you also hold a United Explorer, Quest or Club card

Premier Gold

Earn 12,000 PQP, or 10,000 PQP plus 30 PQF, between 1 January and 31 December. At least 4 of your flights must be operated by United or United Express.

  • Reaching Premier Gold upgrades a United Club card's lounge membership to United Club All Access

Premier Platinum

Earn 18,000 PQP, or 15,000 PQP plus 45 PQF, between 1 January and 31 December. At least 4 of your flights must be operated by United or United Express.

  • PlusPoints, United's upgrade currency, which United gives to Premier Platinum members and above
  • Polaris Saver Award space, which until April 2026 was reserved for Premier Platinum and 1K members
  • Premier cardholders save at least 15% on United flight awards

Premier 1K

Earn 28,000 PQP, or 22,000 PQP plus 60 PQF, between 1 January and 31 December. Card PQP count toward this tier, including the PQP-only route. At least 4 of your flights must be operated by United or United Express.

  • The highest published earning rate: 17 miles per dollar in total on eligible United flights when paying with a United Club card
  • PlusPoints for upgrades
  • Polaris Saver Award space and at least 15% off United flight awards as a Premier cardholder

How flights earn PQP

  • United and United Express flights earn 1 PQP per US dollar of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, and so do connecting bus routes booked with United. Taxes and other fees earn nothing, and PQP always go to the traveller, not the person who paid.
  • Partner flights earn PQP from the award miles they earn: 1 PQP per 5 award miles on preferred partner airlines, capped at 750 PQP in Economy and Premium Economy and 1,500 in First and Business, and 1 PQP per 6 award miles on other MileagePlus partners, capped at 500 PQP per flight in Economy and Premium Economy and 1,000 in First and Business. Bulk tickets on United-operated flights earn 1 PQP per 5 specialty award miles.
  • Every flight on United, United Express and partner airlines earns 1 PQF, except Basic Economy tickets, all flights to Venezuela and flights to Cuba not operated by United.
  • Award travel counts too: 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed on United and United Express flights and seat upgrades, going to the member who travels. On mixed award itineraries only the United flights earn PQP. MileagePlus Upgrade Awards earn 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed plus PQP on the cash co-pay.
  • Paid extras earn 1 PQP per dollar, excluding taxes and fees: Economy Plus and preferred seats on United flights (credited after the trip, to the traveller) and Economy Plus subscriptions (credited on activation, to the member who receives it).
  • Credit card spending earns PQP that counts toward every tier up to and including Premier 1K: 1 PQP per $15 on the United Club Infinite and United Club Business cards (up to 28,000 a year each) and 1 PQP per $20 on the other eligible cards, capped at 1,000 on the Explorer, 4,000 on the United Business card and 18,000 on the Quest.
  • The Quest and Club cards also deposit a yearly card bonus of 1,000 and 1,500 PQP respectively. Chase says the Quest bonus arrives within 8 weeks of 1 February, starting the calendar year after the account opens.

How many miles each tier earns

  • On tickets bought from 2 April 2026, United's published totals are 9 miles per dollar for a General member paying with a United Explorer card, 11 with a United Club card, 13 for a Premier Gold with a United Quest card and 17 for a Premier 1K with a United Club card. A General member without a card earns a third of the Explorer figure.
  • Chase breaks the card totals down: the Explorer's 9 miles are 6 per dollar on the fare as a MileagePlus member plus 3 from the card, and the Quest's 10 are 6 plus 4.
  • United does not publish every tier's rate on a page that could be read for this review, so rates for Premier Silver and Platinum, and for Premier members without a card, are not listed here.

Upgrades for United MileagePlus elites

  • Premier members receive Complimentary Premier Upgrades on select United and United Express flights. Chase says a Premier member who holds a United Explorer, Quest or Club card also gets them on award tickets, together with one companion, subject to availability.
  • Premier Platinum members and above earn PlusPoints, an upgrade currency United introduced in September 2019 to make upgrades more flexible across its network. Current PlusPoints amounts and prices are published only on united.com and are not repeated here.

Credit cards that help with United MileagePlus status

  • United Explorer Card from Chase: US$0 the first year, then US$150. It earns 1 PQP per $20 spent up to 1,000 PQP a year, gives the cardholder and one companion a free first checked bag, and includes priority boarding.
  • United Quest Card: US$350 a year. It earns 1 PQP per $20 spent up to 18,000 PQP a year plus 1,000 card bonus PQP each year, and gives the cardholder and one companion free first and second checked bags.
  • United Club Card: US$695 a year. It earns the most status, 1 PQP per $15 spent up to 28,000 PQP a year plus 1,500 card bonus PQP each year, and includes United Club membership, upgraded to All Access on reaching Premier Gold or spending $50,000 a year on the card, plus Premier Access priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage.
  • The United Business Card earns up to 4,000 PQP a year and the United Club Business Card up to 28,000, both counting toward Premier status.
  • Closed cards still earn PQP for existing cardholders: up to 1,000 on MileagePlus Awards, 3,000 on MileagePlus Select, and 10,000 on the Presidential Plus and Presidential Plus Business cards. Outside the Chase range, First Hawaiian Bank United cards earn 1 PQP per $20 with a cap rising to 2,000 PQP for the 2027 program year, and the Bam MileagePlus Visa Infinite earns 1 PQP per $20 up to 1,500 for 2027.
  • Every United card also lowers award prices: at least 10% off United flight awards for General cardholders and at least 15% for Premier cardholders.

Other ways to get United MileagePlus status

Card spend alone

United says card PQP can meet the PQP-only requirement for Premier 1K. A United Club cardholder can build up to 29,500 PQP a year from the 28,000 spend cap plus the 1,500 card bonus, which clears the 28,000 PQP 1K threshold, as long as they also fly the 4 United or United Express flights every tier needs.

Premier Accelerator

United sells extra PQP through Premier Accelerator when you book a United flight. United says it is only available together with Award Accelerator, which sells extra redeemable miles on the same booking.

Award flights

Redeeming miles on United and United Express flights earns 1 PQP per 100 miles, and United says those PQP can go toward Premier status or additional PlusPoints.

Million Miler lifetime status

Premier status for life once you have flown enough miles with United: lifetime Premier Gold after 1 million miles, Platinum after 2 million and 1K after 3 million.

Status match

United runs a Premier Status Match Challenge, but its rules are published only on a united.com page that was not read for this review, so they are not listed here.

Keeping United MileagePlus status

  • Status must be requalified on each calendar year's activity; status earned in 2026 runs until 31 January 2028. There is no published rollover of surplus PQP or PQF.
  • United gave a one-off 2026 PQP deposit to everyone holding Premier status on 1 February 2026, except Trial status holders: 300 PQP for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,400 for 1K.
  • Card bonus PQP (1,000 on Quest, 1,500 on Club) is deposited every year you keep the card, which gives each new qualification year a head start.

How many PQP do I need for United Premier status?
For status earned in a calendar year: Premier Silver needs 6,000 PQP, or 5,000 PQP plus 15 PQF; Gold 12,000, or 10,000 plus 30 PQF; Platinum 18,000, or 15,000 plus 45 PQF; and 1K 28,000, or 22,000 plus 60 PQF. Every tier also needs at least 4 flights operated by United or United Express.
Can I earn United Premier 1K with a credit card?
Mostly. United says card PQP count up to and including 1K and can meet its PQP-only requirement of 28,000. The United Club cards earn up to 28,000 PQP a year from spending plus 1,500 bonus PQP, so a Club cardholder can clear 28,000 on the card, but still needs at least 4 United or United Express flights.
Do United award tickets earn PQP?
Yes. Award flights and seat upgrades on United and United Express earn 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed, credited to the traveller. On award itineraries that mix United and partner flights, only the United flights earn PQP.
Do United credit cards earn Premier qualifying points?
Yes. The Explorer and Quest cards earn 1 PQP per $20 spent (capped at 1,000 and 18,000 a year), and the Club card earns 1 PQP per $15 up to 28,000. Quest and Club also add 1,000 and 1,500 bonus PQP each year, and card PQP count up to and including Premier 1K.
Do MileagePlus miles count toward Premier status?
No. Redeemable miles and PQP are separate balances. Miles pay for awards and never expire, while PQP and PQF only decide your Premier tier.
How many miles per dollar does a United 1K earn?

Which United card is best for earning status?
The United Club Card, at US$695 a year, earns the most: 1 PQP per $15 up to 28,000 PQP plus 1,500 bonus PQP. The Quest Card, at US$350, earns 1 PQP per $20 up to 18,000 plus 1,000 bonus PQP.
Can United Premier members upgrade award tickets?
Chase says Premier members who hold a United Explorer, Quest or Club card get Complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets on select United and United Express flights, with one companion, subject to availability.
