Virgin Australia Velocity elite status explained

Velocity status is earned with Status Credits in any rolling 365 days: Silver takes 250, Gold 500, Platinum 1,000 and Platinum Plus 2,000, and since 1 October 2025 at least half of them (three quarters for Platinum Plus) must come from flights marketed or operated by Virgin Australia. On Virgin Australia itself Status Credits follow the fare you pay, 1 for every A$12 on Choice, Flex and Business fares and 1 for every A$24 on Lite.

Velocity is not in an airline alliance, so its tiers carry no oneworld, SkyTeam or Star Alliance equivalent; partner benefits come from Virgin Australia's own deals with airlines such as Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and United. Membership is open only to residents of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and a group of Pacific islands, under clause 2.1 of the Velocity terms.

What counts toward status

Status Credits

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

Velocity Points are the currency you spend on Reward Seats, upgrades and partner rewards, and you can earn them from flights, credit cards, banks, hotels and shopping. Status Credits only decide your tier: they cannot be spent, and the Velocity pages read for this guide offer no way to buy them.

Worked example: A$1,200 of Virgin Australia Choice fares earns 100 Status Credits (1 per A$12). On the points side a Red member earns 4 Velocity Points per A$1 spent, a Gold member 7 and a Platinum member 8, so the same trips earn far more points at a higher tier, while every member earns the same 100 Status Credits.

That makes the cost of each tier easy to work out. Gold's 250 Virgin Australia Status Credits take A$3,000 of Choice, Flex or Business fares, or A$6,000 on Lite; earning all 500 on Virgin Australia takes A$6,000 of Choice fares. Platinum Plus's 1,500 Virgin Australia credits take A$18,000.

Reward Seats booked with points earn neither Velocity Points nor Status Credits.

Moving up is checked every day on a rolling 365 days: once the Status Credits earned in the last 365 days reach a tier's threshold, including the Virgin Australia minimum, you move up. Keeping a tier is assessed at the end of your 12-month Benefit Period, on your Review Date, against the Status Credits earned in that Benefit Period, and the retain thresholds are lower than the entry thresholds for every tier except Platinum Plus.

Benefits of each Virgin Australia Velocity tier

Silver

Earn 250 Status Credits in 365 days, at least 125 of them on eligible Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights. Silver is kept with 200 Status Credits in your Benefit Period, 100 of them on Virgin Australia.

  • 50% Points bonus on Virgin Australia flights (except Economy Lite) and on miles flown with Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, United, ANA and Link
  • Two single-entry passes a year to Virgin Australia domestic lounges

Gold

Earn 500 Status Credits in 365 days, at least 250 of them on eligible Virgin Australia flights. Gold is kept with 400 Status Credits in your Benefit Period, 200 of them on Virgin Australia.

  • Virgin Australia domestic lounges before every flight, with one guest plus up to three children aged 2 to 17, and up to 60 minutes after landing
  • Premium Entry to the Virgin Australia lounges in Sydney and Brisbane
  • 75% Points bonus on Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights (except Economy Lite) and on miles flown with Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, United, ANA, Link and Air New Zealand
  • Qatar Airways lounge access and priority boarding when flying with Qatar
  • Request to Fly Ahead, Priority Airport Service and preferential seating
  • Eligible to upgrade Economy Choice fares between Australia and Doha with points, which otherwise needs Economy Flex

Platinum

Earn 1,000 Status Credits in 365 days, at least 500 of them on eligible Virgin Australia flights. Platinum is kept with 800 Status Credits in your Benefit Period, 400 of them on Virgin Australia.

  • Four complimentary Business upgrades a year on full-fare Economy Flex tickets on Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights
  • Virgin Australia domestic lounges with three guests plus up to three children aged 2 to 17, and Sydney and Brisbane Premium Entry

  • Economy X extra-legroom seating for you and companions on the same booking

Platinum Plus

Earn 2,000 Status Credits in 365 days, at least 1,500 of them on eligible Virgin Australia flights, and earn the same 2,000, with 1,500 on Virgin Australia, in each Benefit Period to keep it. Since 1 October 2025 it is Velocity's highest published status.

How flights earn Status Credits

  • On flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia, Status Credits are earned on the fare: 1 per A$12 on Choice, Flex, Group and Business fares and 1 per A$24 on Economy Lite, counting the fare, taxes, fees and carrier charges but not seat upgrades or extras. An A$600 Choice return earns 50 Status Credits; the same trip on Lite earns 25. See Velocity's changes to Status.
  • Partner flights earn by distance and fare since 1 October 2025. Virgin Australia marketed flights operated by partners pay 10 Status Credits in Choice, 15 in Plus and 30 in Business on a flight of up to 500 miles, rising to 40, 80 and 160 beyond 8,500 miles. Flights sold under the partner's own flight number pay less in economy: 5 in Discount Economy and 7 in Regular Economy up to 500 miles, up to 25 and 35 beyond 8,500 miles, with Business and First the same as Virgin Australia's Business column.   • Singapore Airlines between Australia and Singapore, and United between Australia and the US, have their own route tables. Sydney to Singapore earns 30 Status Credits in Choice, 50 in Flex and 100 in Business each way; Sydney to Los Angeles on United earns 45, 65 and 140, and Sydney to Houston 50, 80 and 160. Qatar Airways also has its own zone table.
  • Partner Status Credits never count toward the Virgin Australia minimum. A Gold member who flies only Singapore Airlines and United can earn 500 Status Credits and still fall short, because 250 of them must be earned on Virgin Australia marketed or operated flights.

How many points each tier earns

  • On Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights, Red members earn 4 Velocity Points per A$1 spent since 2 April 2025, Silver 6, Gold 7 and Platinum and Platinum Plus 8. Members who have earned points on an eligible Velocity credit card in the 12 months before travel earn 5, 7.5, 8.75 and 10.
  • Partner flights earn by miles flown and fare class, and Silver, Gold and Platinum get their 50%, 75% and 100% bonuses on Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, United and ANA as well. On Qatar Airways marketed flights from 11 December 2025, for example, business earns 2 points per mile and the lowest economy classes 0.25 to 0.5.
  • Reward Seats booked with points earn no Velocity Points and no Status Credits.

Upgrades for Virgin Australia Velocity elites

  • Platinum members get four complimentary upgrades to Business a year on full-fare Economy Flex tickets, and Platinum Plus members on Economy Flex or Choice, on Virgin Australia marketed and operated domestic and short-haul international flights. Each upgrade needs a valid upgrade certificate and Reward Seat availability in Business. See Velocity's upgrade options.
  • Every member can also upgrade with points on eligible paid fares, and Silver and above get a priority place on the waitlist. Domestic upgrades cost 10,000 points on flights up to 600 miles, 17,500 up to 1,200 miles, 30,000 up to 2,400 miles and 35,000 up to 3,600 miles; trans-Tasman and short-haul international upgrades cost 8,000, 12,000, 16,000, 24,000 and 40,000 across the same bands up to 4,800 miles. Economy Lite and Reward Seat bookings cannot be upgraded.
  • On the long-haul flights between Australia and Doha, any member on an Economy Flex fare can request a points upgrade for 69,000 points, and Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members can also upgrade from Economy Choice for 99,000 points. Long-haul requests close 72 hours before departure online; domestic and short-haul requests close 4 hours before online and can also be made at check-in or in a domestic lounge on the day.

Credit cards that help with Virgin Australia Velocity status

  • The American Express Velocity Platinum Card awards 50 Status Credits when you spend A$25,000 on eligible purchases in a Membership Year, and another 50 for a further A$25,000, so up to 100 a year. It costs A$440 a year and also gives Virgin Australia domestic lounge access at selected airports every time you fly domestically, two lounge guest passes and a domestic return flight each year.
  • Velocity's card comparison page lists the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card with "up to 100 Bonus Status Credits" and two domestic lounge passes a year; check the issuer's terms for the spend needed.
  • Card Status Credits do not count toward the Virgin Australia minimum, so 100 from a card is at most half of Silver and a fifth of Gold. A card also lifts your base earn on Virgin Australia flights from 4 to 5 points per A$1 when you have earned on it in the 12 months before you fly.
  • Commonwealth Bank's Yello points convert to Velocity Points from 1 October 2026, but the 18 August 2026 announcement mentions no Status Credits.

Other ways to get Virgin Australia Velocity status

Forever Gold

Velocity's lifetime tier. Members who have earned 12,000 Status Credits since 1 February 2013, at least 9,000 of them on Virgin Australia flights, never drop below Gold unless their membership ends and they rejoin. Forever Gold members earn 7 points per A$1 on Virgin Australia, like Gold.

Family Pooling

A family pool can send Status Credits to one beneficiary. Pooled credits can make up to 50% of the total needed for Silver, Gold or Platinum and 25% for Platinum Plus and Forever Gold, but they never count toward the Virgin Australia minimum.

Gifted Platinum

Platinum Plus members can gift Platinum status to a companion.

Credit card Status Credits

Up to 100 Status Credits a year from the American Express Velocity Platinum Card on A$50,000 of spending, and up to 100 Bonus Status Credits on the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card.

Keeping Virgin Australia Velocity status

  • To keep a tier you need its retain threshold in your 12-month Benefit Period: 200 Status Credits for Silver, 400 for Gold and 800 for Platinum, half of each on Virgin Australia, and 2,000 for Platinum Plus with 1,500 on Virgin Australia. All the Status Credits counted must be earned in that Benefit Period.
  • Keeping status is assessed after your Review Date, and a member who has not met the requirement downgrades when that date arrives.
  • If you earn enough for a higher tier during the year, you move up as soon as your last 365 days of Status Credits reach it, without waiting for the Review Date.
  • Forever Gold members never fall below Gold, whatever they fly in a year.

What is the difference between Velocity Points and Status Credits?
Velocity Points are what you spend on Reward Seats and upgrades, and you can earn them from cards, banks and partners. Status Credits only count toward your tier. On Virgin Australia you earn 1 Status Credit per A$12 on most fares, the same for every member, while points run from 4 per A$1 for Red members to 8 for Platinum.
Can I get Velocity status from flying only on partners?
