JAL Mileage Bank award chart and sweet spots
JAL Mileage Bank publishes its charts in full. JAL's own international flights have a base chart by route with "Award Ticket PLUS" variable pricing that raises the price when seats are scarce (not applied to first class). Partner awards on a single airline are priced by total distance, and a separate oneworld chart prices round trips on two or more alliance airlines. Every figure below is from JAL's pages.

The oneworld multi-carrier award is priced per round trip on total distance: 25,000 economy or 48,000 business up to 4,000 miles, 40,000 or 80,000 for 4,001 to 8,000, 60,000 or 110,000 for 10,001 to 12,000, and 120,000 or 150,000 for 20,001 to 25,000 miles. First class on partners with two cabins (American domestic, Alaska, Hawaiian) is charged at the business rate.

Fees and surcharges
- Fuel surcharges and taxes are collected on JAL and partner awards; JAL quotes US$35 to US$316 in surcharges plus US$5.60 to US$38.50 in taxes on its own international awards.
- Cancellation and refund charge of JPY 3,100 per ticket on international, partner and oneworld awards (JPY 1,000 domestic), for wholly unused tickets within validity.
- JAL international awards cannot be changed; cancel and rebook instead. Partner and oneworld awards allow date and flight changes online up to 48 hours before departure within the ticket's one-year validity, but not carrier, routing or cabin changes.
- Miles expire 36 months after the month they are earned regardless of activity.
Routing and stopover rules
- JAL international awards: one way or round trip, no stopovers in Japan over 24 hours, open jaws allowed at both ends, at most one international and one domestic sector per direction.
- oneworld awards: one way permitted, up to eight sectors and seven stopovers, one surface sector and open jaws allowed, mixed cabins priced at the higher cabin, valid one year from the first flight.
- Partner awards are priced on the total distance of all sectors.
Recent and upcoming changes
- June 10, 2025: North America to Japan awards rose from 25,000 to 27,000 in economy, 32,500 to 40,000 in premium economy, 50,000 to 55,000 in business and 70,000 to 100,000 to 110,000 to 140,000 in first, matching the current chart.
- Award Ticket PLUS variable pricing has applied to JAL international awards since December 2018.

- 55,000 miles one way at the base price on JAL's own flights from New York or Los Angeles, though Award Ticket PLUS can raise it when seats are scarce. On partner airlines the 4,001 to 6,000 mile band from the West Coast is 60,000 and the 6,001 to 8,000 band from the East Coast is 80,000.
- Does JAL Mileage Bank charge fuel surcharges on awards?
- Yes. JAL collects fuel surcharges and taxes on its own and partner awards, quoting US$35 to US$316 in surcharges on its international routes depending on the destination.
