American Airlines AAdvantage award chart and sweet spots
American prices its own flights dynamically. "Web Special" awards move with the cash fare and can be very cheap on quiet dates and very expensive on busy ones, and they cannot be changed once booked, only cancelled and rebooked. Partner awards on oneworld and other partners are priced from a fixed chart by region and cabin, which is why AAdvantage remains one of the best currencies for international premium cabins.

American's page renders the chart in the browser, so the figures are taken from AwardFares and Frequent Miler, which agree with each other; confirm the price in the booking flow before transferring points.

Sweet spots
Business class to Japan or Korea on JAL
60,000 miles
One way from the US on Japan Airlines, with no fuel surcharges. First class on the same route is 80,000, the cheapest first class award to Asia in any US program.
Business class to Europe on oneworld partners
57,500 miles
One way on Finnair, Iberia or Aer Lingus without surcharges, or on British Airways with them. Off-peak economy is 22,500.
Qatar Qsuite or Cathay business to Asia and the Middle East
70,000 miles
One way from the US to Doha, Hong Kong or Southeast Asia in the best business class products in the alliance.
Domestic Web Special awards
from about 7,500 miles
American's own short flights on quiet dates often price far below the 12,500-mile partner rate, though they cannot be changed.
Fees and surcharges
- No change fees on award tickets, and miles are reinstated free if you cancel before the first flight departs, up to a year after issue.
- No close-in booking fee; awards can be booked from 331 days to two hours before departure, with free holds on bookings more than seven days out.
- Partner awards on British Airways and Iberia carry those airlines' carrier-imposed charges, which can exceed $500 on a transatlantic business class ticket. Most other partners add only taxes, from $5.60 on a domestic award.
- Web Special awards on American's own flights cannot be changed; they can be cancelled and the miles returned.
Routing and stopover rules
- Awards are priced one way, and a trip that includes two long-haul international flights (for example the US to Australia via Asia) needs two awards.
- No stopovers are allowed; open jaws are permitted, and a mixed-cabin itinerary is priced at the highest cabin flown.
- Up to three segments on a domestic one-way and four on an international one-way.
Recent and upcoming changes
- March 1, 2026: Loyalty Point Rewards changed, with the 60,000-point partner bonus rising to 25 percent and the 30 percent bonus at 100,000 points discontinued.
- December 17, 2025: basic economy fares stopped earning miles and Loyalty Points.
- American says its status and reward levels are unchanged for 2026, and no dated partner chart devaluation has been announced this year.
