Etihad Guest elite status explained

Etihad Guest status is earned with Tier Miles, which come from flying Etihad and its partner airlines and from selected co-brand credit cards. Silver normally needs 25,000 Tier Miles, Gold 50,000 and Platinum 125,000 in any 12 months, and a set share of each must come from flights.

Until 31 March 2027 every threshold is cut by 25%, so Gold currently takes 37,500 Tier Miles. Above Platinum sits Emerald, awarded for US$150,000 of flight spend a year. Etihad is not in an alliance, so tier benefits apply on Etihad and a handful of named partners.

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

Etihad Guest Miles are the currency you spend on reward flights, upgrades and the Reward Shop. Tier Miles only move you between tiers and cannot be redeemed, and Etihad offers no way to buy them. Both are earned together on a flight, based on your fare and the distance travelled.

Etihad lets non-flying activity count toward status: spend on selected co-brand cards and Etihad Guest partners earns Tier Miles too. The limit is the flying portion, for example 20,000 of the 50,000 Tier Miles for Gold (15,000 of 37,500 under the current reduction) must come from flights.

Worked example: a Gold member takes an Etihad flight that credits 5,000 Etihad Guest Miles at the base rate (a round figure; the miles calculator shows real routes). The flight adds Tier Miles toward the flying portion, and the 50% Gold bonus lifts the spendable balance to 7,500 Etihad Guest Miles. Etihad describes the tier bonus as bonus Miles and does not say it adds Tier Miles.

Card spend shows the split just as clearly. The FAB Etihad Guest Infinite card in the UAE earns up to 3.5 Etihad Guest Miles and 2.5 Tier Miles per AED 10 spent locally, so AED 10,000 of UAE purchases gives up to 3,500 Miles and 2,500 Tier Miles.

There is no calendar year. You qualify on Tier Miles earned in any rolling 12 months, and the tier is valid for 12 months from the month you qualify. Renewal is judged on the 12 months that end with your current tier end date, and Custom Benefits must be chosen within 30 days of a tier year starting.

Benefits of each Etihad Guest tier

Silver

Earn 25,000 Tier Miles in 12 months, at least 10,000 of them from flying. From 18 March 2026 to 31 March 2027 the target is 18,750 Tier Miles with 7,500 from flying.

Spend US$150,000 on flights with Etihad or its partner airlines in 12 months. Etihad's FAQ also lists 125,000 Tier Miles, 40,000 of them from flying, for keeping Emerald.

How flights earn Tier Miles

  • Tier Miles are earned on Etihad flights and on most partner airline flights, based on your fare and the distance travelled, and partner flights count toward the flying portion of each threshold. The exceptions include Air Canada, EL AL and Ethiopian Airlines: Etihad's partner pages for all three say their flights earn Etihad Guest Miles but no Tier Miles. The miles calculator shows the exact Tier Miles for a route and fare.
  • Co-brand cards and Etihad Guest partners also earn Tier Miles, but they cannot replace the flying portion. A member chasing Gold (standard rules) could earn 30,000 Tier Miles from card spend yet still needs 20,000 from flights.
  • Award travel mostly does not help. Value Promo award seats earn no Tier Miles, while since 13 November 2025 Comfort Promo awards earn 25% and Deluxe Promo awards 50% of the usual Tier Miles. No award seat earns Etihad Guest Miles, and on a Miles plus cash booking you earn only on the cash portion.

How many miles each tier earns

  • Flights earn Etihad Guest Miles by fare brand and distance, and tier members add 25% (Silver), 50% (Gold) or 100% (Platinum and Emerald) in bonus Miles on Etihad flights.
  • Etihad-operated flights booked on another airline's ticket earn by booking class: 275% of distance in First (F, A), 200% in Business J, 175% in C and D, 130% in W, Z and P, then 100% in Economy B and Y, 75% in Q, M, K and H, 50% in E, U, V, L and G, and 25% in T.
  • Partner airline flights credit at the percentage in each partner's own earning table. An upgraded ticket earns only on the original fare.

Upgrades for Etihad Guest elites

  • Complimentary upgrades are a Platinum and Emerald benefit and apply only on Etihad flights to and from 15 Gulf, Middle East and Pakistan cities. Silver and above can also pick upgrade vouchers as a Custom Benefit, and Gold and above can unlock them as Beyond Benefits.
  • Any member can upgrade with Etihad Guest Miles at a fixed mileage price per route and cabin, priced in the miles calculator under "Spend miles" then "Upgrade". Instant upgrades with Miles are also sold at check-in, though the airport price can differ from the online one.
  • Bid for Upgrade takes offers up to four hours before departure, payable by card or with Miles, and a failed bid costs nothing. Economy Basic, Value and Comfort Promo seats, group and non-public fares cannot be upgraded, and Miles never upgrade partner flights.

Credit cards that help with Etihad Guest status

  • Etihad's own card pages list co-brand cards issued in the UAE rather than the US. The FAB Etihad Guest cards earn 2.5 Tier Miles per AED 10 spent, and the Infinite card grants Gold (the Signature card Silver) once you complete one return flight within six months of activation.
  • The FAB Infinite card earns up to 7 Etihad Guest Miles per AED 10 on flights and airline partners, 3.5 on UAE purchases and 6 internationally, with up to 55,000 welcome Miles.
  • Cardholders who fall short of requalifying can buy back Silver for 75,000 Etihad Guest Miles or Gold for 150,000, applying within two months of the tier expiring and at least 14 days before.

Other ways to get Etihad Guest status

Status match

Etihad runs a paid match at etihad.statusmatch.com for residents of India, Australia and the GCC holding status with airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, British Airways, Singapore Airlines or Virgin Australia. It grants Silver or Gold for four months (six in Australia), extended by 12 months after one Etihad return flight, and India pays US$59 for Silver or US$99 for Gold. Each person can be matched once.

Reduced thresholds to 31 March 2027

From 18 March 2026 to 31 March 2027 all Tier Mile targets are 25% lower: 18,750 for Silver, 37,500 for Gold and 93,750 for Platinum to reach, and 15,000, 30,000 and 75,000 to keep.

Six-month tier extension

Members can extend their tier by six months once during the life of the account, offered as a Custom Benefit.

Tier buy-back for cardholders

Co-brand cardholders can buy back an expiring Silver for 75,000 Etihad Guest Miles or Gold for 150,000. Platinum and Emerald cannot be bought.

Sharing and family

A tier cannot be gifted, but Gold and higher members earn Beyond Benefits such as upgrades and lounge passes that can be given to family or friends. Family Membership pools Miles for up to nine relatives but does not share tier benefits. There is no lifetime tier.

Keeping Etihad Guest status

  • To keep a tier you need 20,000 Tier Miles for Silver (10,000 from flying), 40,000 for Gold (20,000 from flying) and 100,000 for Platinum (40,000 from flying) in the 12 months before your tier end date. Under the reduction running to 31 March 2027 that becomes 15,000 (7,500), 30,000 (15,000) and 75,000 (30,000).
  • Etihad publishes no soft landing, and Tier Miles above the target do not roll over into the next tier year. The cushions are the one-time six-month extension and, for co-brand cardholders, the Silver or Gold buy-back.

Do Etihad Gold members get lounge access on partner airlines?
No. Gold, Platinum and Emerald members use Etihad lounges worldwide, but partner lounges are excluded. At Zayed International in Abu Dhabi the tier benefit applies only when flying an Etihad-operated flight.
