Why American AAdvantage miles are worth what they are
American AAdvantage miles are valued at 1.4 to 1.7 cents each in September 2026, the highest of the three big US programs. The Points Guy raised its figure from 1.4 to 1.45 cents this year, and NerdWallet's survey of actual economy awards put the median at 1.7 cents, ahead of United and Delta.
Two things support that value. American still prices partner awards from a chart, so oneworld premium cabins on Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific return three to six cents a mile, and its own domestic Web Special awards are often cheap on quiet dates. AAdvantage miles are also harder to replace than most: only Citi ThankYou Points from premium cards and Marriott Bonvoy transfer in (Bilt ended its American partnership in June 2024), so a large balance usually came from flying or the Citi and Barclays co-branded cards.
