American Airlines AAdvantage elite status explained

AAdvantage status is decided by one number, Loyalty Points, earned between March 1 and the end of February. You need 40,000 for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum, with no separate segment, distance or spend requirement.

Loyalty Points are earned one for one with eligible AAdvantage miles, whether the miles come from flying, an AAdvantage credit card or shopping and dining partners. That makes AAdvantage the easiest major US program to reach without flying much, and card spend alone can qualify you for any tier.

Loyalty Points

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

Every eligible AAdvantage mile you earn also posts as one Loyalty Point, but the two balances behave differently. Miles are the redeemable currency: you spend them on award flights and upgrades and your balance goes down. Loyalty Points are never spent; they only count up through the qualification year and reset to zero each March 1.

Not every mile earns a Loyalty Point. Bonus miles from promotional offers, including credit card sign-up bonuses, and miles you buy, receive as a gift, transfer or reactivate never count, and neither do conversions from another program's currency. Award flights earn neither miles nor Loyalty Points, and Basic Economy tickets bought from December 17, 2025 no longer earn Loyalty Points.

Worked example: an AAdvantage Gold member buys a US$500 Main Cabin ticket on American. The flight earns 5 base miles per dollar (2,500) plus the 40% Gold bonus (1,000), so 3,500 AAdvantage miles land in the redeemable balance and 3,500 Loyalty Points go toward next year's tier. If the member then spends 3,500 miles on an award, the mile balance drops but the Loyalty Points stay put.

The qualification year runs from March 1 to the last day of February. Status is valid from the moment you reach a threshold through March 31 of the following full year, so the earlier in the qualification year you qualify, the longer you enjoy the tier.

Above AAdvantage Executive Platinum: invitation only

  • ConciergeKey. American's invitation-only tier sits above Executive Platinum and boards before all status tiers. It runs on its own year, from acceptance (or May 1) through April 30, and American does not publish the criteria.

How flights earn LPs

  • On flights marketed by American, Loyalty Points equal the miles earned: 5 per US$ plus your status bonus. A general member on a US$400 fare earns 2,000 Loyalty Points; an Executive Platinum member on the same fare earns 4,400, because status bonus miles count as Loyalty Points too.
  • oneworld and other eligible partner flights credited to AAdvantage post their miles as Loyalty Points as well. On fare-based partners such as British Airways, Iberia and LEVEL the same 40% to 120% status bonuses apply; Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways earn on distance-based charts that also list a status bonus.
  • Away from flying, every mile earned on an AAdvantage credit card and with AAdvantage shopping, dining and other earning partners is also a Loyalty Point. Excluded are bonus miles from offers, bought, gifted and transferred miles, and conversions of other programs' points.
  • Award tickets and Basic Economy tickets bought from December 17, 2025 earn no Loyalty Points. Cash upgrades bought from August 14, 2024 do earn: 5 miles and 5 Loyalty Points per US$ on the upgrade price, more with status.

How many miles each tier earns

  • On American-marketed flights everyone earns 5 base miles per US$, and status adds 40% for Gold (7 per US$), 60% for Platinum (8), 80% for Platinum Pro (9) and 120% for Executive Platinum (11).
  • A US$1,000 ticket therefore earns 5,000 miles for a general member, 7,000 for Gold, 8,000 for Platinum, 9,000 for Platinum Pro and 11,000 for Executive Platinum, and each of those miles is also a Loyalty Point.
  • Award tickets are on American's list of ineligible ticket types and earn no miles, whatever your status.

Upgrades for American Airlines AAdvantage elites

  • Status members get unlimited complimentary upgrades from Main Cabin or Premium Economy to the next cabin for themselves and 1 companion, requested automatically. They clear from 100 hours before departure for Executive Platinum, 72 for Platinum Pro, 48 for Platinum and 24 for Gold, with ties broken by upgrade type and rolling 12-month Loyalty Points. The upgrades apply on eligible paid fares and on AAdvantage award tickets.
  • From August 25, 2026 status members are also upgraded automatically into Premium Economy on select Hawaii and transcontinental routes. Basic Economy tickets bought from May 18, 2026 are not eligible for complimentary upgrades.
  • Systemwide upgrades are one of the Loyalty Point Rewards choices: 2 at 175,000 Loyalty Points, 1 at each of 400,000, 550,000 and 750,000, and 4, 6 or 10 at 1 million, 3 million and 5 million. Million Milers also receive four at 2 million miles. They work on individual published fares on American and on British Airways transatlantic flights, are valid through the status membership year, and are not deducted until the upgrade confirms.
  • Mileage upgrades can be requested on aa.com up to 24 hours before departure on flights operated by American or American Eagle and tickets bought in the 50 US states; miles must be in the account 48 hours before departure to join the airport standby list. Static-mileage upgrade awards were withdrawn on August 11, 2025, and cash co-payments are non-refundable once ticketed.
  • American also sells cash upgrades at US$40 to US$90 per 500-mile segment. It does not run an upgrade bidding auction.

Credit cards that help with American Airlines AAdvantage status

  • Every base mile earned on an AAdvantage co-branded credit card posts as a Loyalty Point, so US$40,000 of everyday card spend earning 1 mile per dollar is enough for Gold on its own. Sign-up bonuses and other bonus miles from offers do not count.
  • Card Loyalty Points follow your statements, so the March statement is split: transactions from early February to February 28 count toward the year just ended and March transactions toward the new one, posting up to 10 weeks later.
  • The Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Legend Mastercard is the status card: it adds a 10,000 Loyalty Point bonus each time you reach 50,000, 90,000, 165,000 and 240,000 Loyalty Points in the same qualification year, up to 40,000 bonus Loyalty Points a year. It earns 4 miles per US$1 on eligible American purchases (5 after US$150,000 of annual spend) and 12 on AAdvantage Hotels and Cars bookings.
  • The Executive card is also the only card with Admirals Club membership, covering the primary cardmember and up to two guests, which status alone only gives on international itineraries. Its annual fee rose to US$695 for new cardmembers from August 23, 2026, and it includes a free first checked bag on domestic American itineraries for the cardmember and up to 8 companions.
  • Primary AAdvantage cardmembers are exempt from the 24-month mileage expiration rule for as long as the card account stays open.

Other ways to get American Airlines AAdvantage status

Status match (and challenge)

Members with earned (not matched or lifetime) status at Delta, United, JetBlue or Southwest can apply for a limited-time match: Delta Silver, United Premier Silver, JetBlue Mosaic 1 or Southwest A-List map to Gold, top tiers such as Diamond or 1K to Executive Platinum. Matched status lasts 4 months and you keep it for the membership year by earning 13,000 Loyalty Points (Gold), 25,000 (Platinum), 42,000 (Platinum Pro) or 67,000 (Executive Platinum) in that window; you cannot reapply for 2 years.

Million Miler (lifetime)

Million Miler status is built on flight distance on American-marketed and partner-marketed flights, not on bonus miles or Loyalty Points, and the tier it grants lasts for life whatever you fly later. Million Milers receive four systemwide upgrades at 2 million miles.

Gifted status (Loyalty Point Rewards)

High earners can give status away: a Gold status gift is among the reward choices at 175,000 Loyalty Points, a Platinum gift from 400,000, Platinum Pro at 1 million and Executive Platinum at 3 million. The recipient must hold a lower tier and the gift must be made by the reward's stated redemption date.

AAdvantage Business Pass

Businesses enrolled in AAdvantage Business can buy AAdvantage Pass packages that assign status and Loyalty Points to their travelers. It is the only published way to buy status.

World of Hyatt (ending)

Loyalty Point Rewards have included World of Hyatt Discoverist status at 100,000 Loyalty Points and Explorist as a choice at 175,000. On September 9, 2026 American said the enhanced Hyatt relationship will not continue: members who link accounts by November 15, 2026 can still earn Hyatt awards through Loyalty Point Rewards until February 28, 2027.

Buying miles does not help

Bought, gifted, transferred and reactivated miles never become Loyalty Points, so there is no way to buy your way over a threshold. Card spend and partner earning are the non-flying routes.

Keeping American Airlines AAdvantage status

  • There is no soft landing and no rollover. On March 1 your Loyalty Points reset to zero, and your tier for the next status year is simply what you earned: finish with 130,000 Loyalty Points as an Executive Platinum and you become Platinum Pro, finish under 40,000 and you return to general membership when your current status ends on March 31.
  • Million Milers keep their lifetime tier regardless of annual activity.

How many Loyalty Points do I need for AAdvantage Executive Platinum?
You need 200,000 Loyalty Points earned between March 1 and the end of February. The lower tiers need 40,000 (Gold), 75,000 (Platinum) and 125,000 (Platinum Pro). There is no segment or spend minimum alongside the points.
Are AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points the same thing?
No. Eligible miles earn Loyalty Points one for one, but miles are spent on awards while Loyalty Points only count toward status and reset each March 1. Redeeming miles never reduces your Loyalty Points.
Can I get AAdvantage status with only a credit card?
Yes. Base miles from AAdvantage credit card spending count as Loyalty Points, so enough spending qualifies you with no flights at all. The Citi / AAdvantage Executive card adds 10,000 bonus Loyalty Points at each of 50,000, 90,000, 165,000 and 240,000, while welcome bonuses and other promotional bonus miles do not count.
Do award flights earn Loyalty Points?
No. Award tickets earn neither miles nor Loyalty Points. Your complimentary upgrades and free bags still apply when you fly on an award.
Does Basic Economy earn Loyalty Points on American?
Not for tickets bought from December 17, 2025, which earn no Loyalty Points. Basic Economy tickets bought from May 18, 2026 are also excluded from complimentary upgrades and free Main Cabin Extra.
When does the AAdvantage qualification year reset?
Loyalty Points reset to zero every March 1. Status you earn lasts from the day you reach it through March 31 of the following full year, and there is no rollover of surplus points.
Does American match status from other airlines?
American runs a limited-time status match for earned status at Delta, United, JetBlue and Southwest. You get 4 months of status and keep it by earning between 13,000 and 67,000 Loyalty Points in that window, depending on the tier.
