Qantas Frequent Flyer elite status explained

Qantas status is earned with Status Credits, a fixed number per flight set by distance and fare type, on Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld and oneworld connect airlines. Silver takes 300 Status Credits in your Membership Year, Gold 700, Platinum 1,400 and Platinum One 3,600, and every tier except Platinum One also needs at least four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights.

The program is in the middle of its biggest overhaul in years. From 8 December 2026 excess Status Credits roll over and up to 140 Status Credits a year can be earned on the ground from everyday Qantas Points, and from 2027 each tier has a single target to reach and to keep, plus new lifetime Platinum milestones.

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

Qantas Points are the currency you spend on flights, upgrades and shopping; Status Credits only decide your tier and can never be spent, transferred or bought. You earn Qantas Points from flights, cards and hundreds of partners, but until 8 December 2026 Status Credits come almost entirely from flying.

Worked example: a return trip from Sydney to Los Angeles on a Qantas Discount Economy fare earns 4,500 Qantas Points and 45 Status Credits each way, so 9,000 Qantas Points and 90 Status Credits for the trip. A Gold member gets a 75% Status Bonus on the points, taking the trip to 15,750 Qantas Points, but still earns exactly 90 Status Credits, because the Status Bonus never applies to Status Credits.

The two currencies also react differently to the fare. The same Sydney to Los Angeles flight in Discount Business earns 13,500 Qantas Points but 180 Status Credits each way, four times the Discount Economy credit for three times the points, so premium cabins are the fast track to status.

Classic Flight Rewards booked with points earn neither Qantas Points nor Status Credits. Bookings paid with Points Plus Pay count as paid tickets and earn both.

Each member has a personal Membership Year that starts on the first day of the month after your Anniversary Month and ends on the last day of that Anniversary Month the following year. Status Credits reset when a Membership Year ends, and the tier you have earned carries through the following Membership Year. Until the 2027 changes take effect, keeping a tier takes fewer Status Credits than reaching it: 250 for Silver, 600 for Gold and 1,200 for Platinum.

Earn 700 Status Credits in your Membership Year, including at least four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights; 600 Status Credits keeps Gold until 2027, when 700 becomes the target to reach and to keep.

Platinum One

Earn 3,600 Status Credits in your Membership Year, at least 2,700 of them on Qantas flights, and earn 3,600 again each year to keep it.

How flights earn Status Credits

  • Status Credits are earned only on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member and oneworld connect flights, and the amount depends on the distance band and the fare you buy. On Qantas domestic flights of up to 750 miles, such as Sydney to Melbourne, Discount Economy earns 10 Status Credits, Flexible Economy 20, Business 40 and First 60.
  • Longer domestic flights pay more: 751 to 1,500 miles earns 15 Status Credits in Discount Economy up to 90 in First, and flights over 1,500 miles 20 up to 120.
  • International flights are priced by route region. From the Australian east coast to the US West Coast or Canada, Qantas pays 45 Status Credits in Discount Economy, 60 in Economy, 90 in Flexible Economy, 100 in Premium Economy, 180 in Discount Business, 200 in Flexible Business and 270 in First, each way. Two return trips in Discount Business (720 Status Credits) are enough for Gold.
  • Partner flights count, but at least four eligible flights each Membership Year must be on Qantas or Jetstar for Silver, Gold or Platinum, and Platinum One needs 2,700 of its 3,600 Status Credits on Qantas itself. Use the Qantas earning tables to check an exact route before you book.
  • From 8 December 2026, Status Credits on the ground lets every member earn up to 140 Status Credits per Membership Year by collecting Qantas Points from credit cards, banking and home loans, everyday shopping, hotels, insurance, utilities and other partner categories. Points that are transferred or converted in, Qantas Wellbeing App points and some bonus points are excluded, and Qantas has not published the conversion rate on its program page.

How many points each tier earns

  • On Qantas, Jetstar and American Airlines flights, Silver earns 50% more Qantas Points than a Bronze member, Gold 75% and Platinum and Platinum One 100%. Other oneworld and partner flights pay the table rate with no Status Bonus.
  • For example, a Discount Economy flight of up to 750 miles on Qantas earns a Bronze member 500 Qantas Points, a Gold member 875 and a Platinum member 1,000, while the 10 Status Credits are the same for everyone.
  • Classic Flight Rewards, free tickets and prize tickets earn no Qantas Points and no Status Credits. Points Club and Points Club Plus members currently earn Status Credits on Qantas-marketed Classic Rewards, but that ends when Points Club retires on 8 December 2026.

Upgrades for Qantas Frequent Flyer elites

  • Qantas has no complimentary upgrades for any tier. Every upgrade is a Classic Upgrade Reward paid in Qantas Points, and status decides your place in the queue: Platinum One first, then Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.
  • Internationally, Platinum One requests can clear up to 7 days before departure, Platinum up to 3 days and Gold and below within 24 hours. Points are only deducted when the upgrade is confirmed, and on some international flights you can opt in to stay eligible up to the gate.
  • On domestic flights, Platinum One, Platinum, Gold and Qantas Club members can request an On Departure Upgrade in the Qantas App within three hours of departure; once confirmed, those points are not refundable.
  • Costs are points only. A domestic Economy to Business upgrade on a flight of up to 600 miles, such as Sydney to Melbourne, is 6,200 points from a Flex fare, 12,500 from a Red e-Deal and 15,000 from a Classic Flight Reward. Upgrades are available on eligible paid fares and on Economy, Premium Economy and Classic Plus reward bookings, but only on Qantas-operated flights, never on partners or codeshares. Credit cards that help with Qantas Frequent Flyer status

  • No credit card gives Qantas status directly, and none earns Status Credits until 8 December 2026. From that date, Qantas Points earned on cards count toward the up to 140 Status Credits a year available through Status Credits on the ground, alongside banking, utilities, hotels, fuel and shopping.
  • The co-branded Qantas Premier cards from Qantas Money are Australian products. The Qantas Premier Everyday card earns up to 0.75 Qantas Points per A$1 for an A$99 annual fee; the Platinum earns up to 1 point per A$1 with an A$349 first-year fee, up to 80,000 bonus points and lounge invitations; the Titanium earns up to 1.25 points per A$1 with an A$1,200 fee, 150,000 bonus points and lounge invitations.
  • Even at the full 140 a year, card spending covers less than half of Silver's 300 Status Credits and a fifth of Gold's 700, and the four Qantas or Jetstar flights are still required, so flying remains the real route to a tier.

Other ways to get Qantas Frequent Flyer status

Lifetime status

Lifetime Silver needs 7,000 cumulative Status Credits, Lifetime Gold 14,000 and Lifetime Platinum 75,000. Lifetime status never expires and takes over whenever your annual tier drops below it, and partner flights and on-the-ground credits both count toward it.

Lifetime Platinum milestones from 2027

From 2027 Qantas awards a complimentary year of Platinum at 25,000, 35,000, 45,000, 55,000 and 65,000 lifetime Status Credits, and up to five of those years can be banked.

Status Credits on the ground

From 8 December 2026 up to 140 Status Credits a year can come from Qantas Points earned with cards, banking, utilities, hotels, shopping and other partners. That is half of Silver on its own and the closest Qantas comes to selling status, since Status Credits cannot be bought.

Gifted status

A Platinum member who reaches 2,400 Status Credits can choose complimentary Gold for a family member or friend instead of 50,000 Qantas Points, and a Platinum One member can gift Platinum to one person for as long as they keep Platinum One.

Status Hold for parental leave

Qantas offers a Status Hold for members on parental leave that pauses their tier for up to 18 months, so a year spent off the road does not cost them status.

Hotel partnership

Accor works the other way round: linking your Qantas and ALL Accor accounts fast-tracks Gold, Platinum and Platinum One members to ALL Silver after one eligible stay. Linked members also earn 3 Qantas Points per A$1 at Asia-Pacific Accor hotels, though the partnership confers no Qantas status.

Status match and challenge

Qantas does not publish a standing status match or status challenge for members of other airline programs.

Keeping Qantas Frequent Flyer status

  • Until the 2027 changes, each tier has a lower retain threshold than its entry threshold: 250 Status Credits for Silver, 600 for Gold and 1,200 for Platinum, each with four Qantas or Jetstar flights. Platinum One must earn the full 3,600 again every year.
  • From 2027 Qantas moves to a single target per tier, so Gold, for example, will need 700 Status Credits both to reach and to keep.
  • From 8 December 2026 surplus Status Credits roll into the next Membership Year: Silver carries 25% of the excess up to 100, Gold 50% up to 350, and Platinum and Platinum One 50% up to 500. Rollover replaces the current Loyalty Bonus of 50 Status Credits for every 500 earned, worth up to 200 a year.
  • If you hold Lifetime Silver, Gold or Platinum, you never fall below that tier, whatever you fly in a year.

How many Status Credits do I need for Qantas Gold?
Qantas Gold takes 700 Status Credits in your Membership Year, including at least four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights. Until 2027 you keep Gold with 600, but from 2027 the target to keep it is also 700.
What is the difference between Qantas Points and Status Credits?
Qantas Points are what you spend on reward flights and upgrades, and you can earn them from cards and partners. Status Credits only count toward your tier, cannot be spent or bought, and until December 2026 come from flying. A Gold member flying Sydney to Los Angeles return in Discount Economy earns 15,750 Qantas Points but just 90 Status Credits.
Can I earn Qantas Status Credits with a credit card?
Not yet. From 8 December 2026, Status Credits on the ground lets you earn up to 140 Status Credits a year from Qantas Points collected with cards and other partners. That can cover most of the 300 needed for Silver, but you still need four Qantas or Jetstar flights.
Do Status Credits roll over at Qantas?

Does Qantas Gold or Platinum get free upgrades?
No. Qantas does not give complimentary upgrades to any tier; you pay for Classic Upgrade Rewards with Qantas Points. Status decides priority, with Platinum One cleared first and up to 7 days before international departures, then Platinum at 3 days and Gold at 24 hours.
How do I get Qantas Lifetime Gold?
Earn 14,000 Status Credits over your membership. Lifetime Silver comes at 7,000 and Lifetime Platinum at 75,000, and from 2027 Qantas also awards a free year of Platinum at 25,000, 35,000, 45,000, 55,000 and 65,000 lifetime Status Credits.
Do flights on American Airlines and other oneworld partners earn Qantas Status Credits?
Yes. Oneworld and oneworld connect flights earn Status Credits, but you still need four Qantas or Jetstar flights each year for Silver, Gold or Platinum. American Airlines is also the only partner on which the 50% to 100% Status Bonus on Qantas Points applies.
