Cathay Pacific Asia Miles elite status explained

Cathay status is earned only with Status Points: 300 for Silver, 600 for Gold and 1,200 for Diamond in the 2026 calendar year, with a top Diamond Exec level at 2,400. Status Points come from Cathay Pacific and oneworld flights and, in small amounts, from Cathay co-brand card spending.

Status buys service rather than extra miles. Silver, Gold and Diamond earn the same Asia Miles as a Green member, but get lounges, free seats, extra baggage, Wi-Fi and upgrade vouchers, and they map to oneworld Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

The programme changes on 1 January 2027: Status Points will keep accruing through the year instead of resetting after each upgrade, Diamond Exec becomes a formal tier, and long-time Diamonds get a banked reserve of status years.

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

Asia Miles are the redeemable currency: you spend them on award flights, upgrades and lounge passes, and many partners pay them out. Status Points are a separate counter that only decides your tier. They cannot be bought, redeemed or converted from Asia Miles, and they reset at the end of each membership period.

Only three things earn Status Points: flights on Cathay Pacific, flights on oneworld airlines in fares Cathay designates as eligible, and spending on Cathay co-branded credit cards. Everything else, from hotel stays to bank-point transfers, adds Asia Miles only.

Worked example: Hong Kong to New York is in Cathay's ultra-long zone (7,501 miles or more). A paid Business Flex ticket in J or C earns 150 Status Points and 15,000 Asia Miles each way, so the round trip alone brings 300 Status Points, enough for Silver, plus 30,000 Asia Miles to spend. The same round trip on an Economy Light fare in class Q earns 50 Status Points and 5,000 Asia Miles, and as an Asia Miles award it would earn nothing.

Upgrades change the result too. A Bookable Upgrade or a paid upgrade credits both counters at the higher cabin, while an upgrade redeemed with Asia Miles credits at the original fare.

Card spending shows the gap too. The US Cathay World Elite Mastercard earns Asia Miles on every purchase, but only 10 Status Points for every US$5,000 spent in a month, capped at 100 Status Points a calendar year, a third of what Silver requires.

In 2026 Status Points are counted over the calendar year, 1 January to 31 December (Hong Kong time). You move up one status at a time, and under the 2026 terms your Status Points reset to zero each time you progress to the next status, as well as at the end of the membership period. From 1 January 2027 points earned from 1 January to 31 December will not reset after each upgrade, and that year's total sets your status for the following year.

Silver

Earn 300 Status Points in the calendar year from Cathay Pacific flights, eligible oneworld flights and co-brand card spending.

Gold

Earn 600 Status Points in the calendar year.

  • Business Class lounges with one guest on Cathay and every oneworld airline, plus the Cathay arrival lounge.
  • An extra 15 kg or one extra piece of checked baggage, with priority baggage handling.
  • Free extra-legroom and preferred seats, requested at least 24 hours before departure.
  • Complimentary inflight Wi-Fi in every cabin on Cathay Pacific.
  • A guaranteed Economy seat on a full flight if you book at least 72 hours before departure.
  • Four Bookable Upgrades for flights up to 3,700 miles on reaching 1,000 Status Points.
  • Two lounge passes at 800 Status Points, and priority boarding across oneworld.
  • Four Seasons room upgrades, early check-in and late checkout, and a two-class Hertz upgrade.

Diamond

Earn 1,200 Status Points in the calendar year.

  • First Class lounges with two guests on Cathay and every oneworld airline, whatever cabin you fly.
  • An extra 20 kg or one extra piece of checked baggage, with priority baggage handling.
  • First Class check-in counters where available and fast-track security lanes where offered.
  • A guaranteed Economy seat on a full flight if you book at least 24 hours before departure.
  • Four Bookable Upgrades for flights of any distance on reaching 1,600 Status Points.
  • A Gold companion card for one person on reaching 1,800 Status Points.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi, free extra-legroom seats and the first Redemption Group nominee change free.
  • Peninsula Hotels limousine transfers, upgrades and spa and dining discounts.

Diamond Exec

Earn 2,400 or more Status Points in the calendar year. It becomes a formal tier on 1 January 2027, and 2,400 points earned in 2026 qualify you for it on that date.

  • A dedicated Relationship Manager, tailored privileges and what Cathay calls an elevated level of service.
  • Complimentary inflight Wi-Fi in every cabin on Cathay Pacific.
  • From 2027, up to 1,200 surplus Status Points roll over to the next year.

  • Diamond Plus. Cathay places Diamond Exec between Diamond and Diamond Plus, but it does not publish how to qualify for Diamond Plus.

How flights earn Status Points

  • Each eligible Cathay Pacific or oneworld flight earns Status Points on the fare you book, and Status Points are the only measure: there is no segment count, distance requirement or minimum number of Cathay flights. The figures below have applied to Cathay Pacific flights since 20 August 2025.
  • Status Points per one-way Cathay flight, by zone (ultra-short 1 to 750 miles, short 751 to 2,750, medium 2,751 to 5,000, long 5,001 to 7,500, ultra-long 7,501 or more): First 35 to 180; Business Flex (J, C) 30, 40 to 50, 90, 130 and 150; Business Essential or Light (D, P, I) 25, 35 to 45, 75, 100 and 120; Premium Economy Flex (W, R) 25, 30 to 35, 60, 80 and 100. Cathay's table has two short-haul columns for the same 751 to 2,750-mile band, labelled Short Type 1 and Short Type 2, and the paired figures above show both.
  • Economy earns by booking class and fare type. Full-fare classes Y, B, H and K earn 25 to 90 Status Points on Flex, 15 to 70 on Essential and 10 to 50 on Light, while the cheapest classes S, N, Q and O earn as little as 3 to 25 on Light. Light fares were cut in the August 2025 changes while premium cabins went up.
  • oneworld flights count on the fares Cathay designates as eligible, so British Airways, American, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and other oneworld flights credited to Asia Miles can build Cathay status.
  • Tickets redeemed with Asia Miles or any other frequent flyer points earn no Status Points. A Bookable Upgrade or a paid upgrade earns Status Points on the higher cabin; an upgrade redeemed with Asia Miles earns on the original one.
  • Co-brand card spending is the only non-flying source. The US Cathay World Elite Mastercard adds up to 100 Status Points a year, and Hong Kong-issued Cathay cards earn Status Points on spend as well.

How many miles each tier earns

  • Cathay pays no status bonus on Asia Miles. Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Exec members earn the same fare-class amount as Green members on Cathay and oneworld flights, and bonus miles come only from time-limited promotions.
  • On Cathay Pacific flights Asia Miles are set per flight by zone, cabin, booking class and fare type, and on every row of Cathay's table they are exactly 100 times the Status Points. A long-zone flight (5,001 to 7,500 miles) earns 16,000 Asia Miles in First, 13,000 in Business Flex, 8,000 in Premium Economy Flex, 7,000 in Economy Flex (Y, B, H, K) and 4,000 in Economy Light in the same classes.
  • Partner flights earn the percentage of distance set by that partner's fare-class chart, regardless of your tier. See our Asia Miles earning guide.
  • Award flights earn no Asia Miles and no Status Points.

Upgrades for Cathay Pacific Asia Miles elites

  • There are no automatic complimentary upgrades. Gold members get four Bookable Upgrades on reaching 1,000 Status Points (flights up to 3,700 miles) and Diamond members four on reaching 1,600 (any distance). Each is valid 12 months and requested online between 360 days and 2 hours before departure, subject to availability.
  • Bookable Upgrades move Economy Flex or Essential (Y, B, H, K, M, L, V) to Premium Economy, Premium Economy Flex (W, R) to Business, and Business J, C, D, P or I to First. Economy Light, Premium Economy Essential and award tickets are excluded.
  • Anyone can use Asia Miles for an Upgrade Award up to 360 days ahead on an eligible paid Cathay ticket, or an Airport Upgrade Award at check-in. A waitlisted upgrade is cancelled if it has not cleared 96 hours before departure, and both kinds work only on Cathay Pacific marketed and operated flights. Costs are on the Asia Miles award chart.
  • Upgrade Bid is not available on Asia Miles redemption tickets. From 1 January 2027 mid-status benefits end, and Upgrade Passes and the Gold companion membership become benefits of the status itself; Cathay had not published how many Upgrade Passes each tier gets when this guide was reviewed.

Credit cards that help with Cathay Pacific Asia Miles status

  • The US Cathay World Elite Mastercard earns 10 Status Points for every US$5,000 of eligible purchases in a calendar month, capped at 100 Status Points a calendar year. It can top up a flying total but cannot reach Silver (300) on its own.
  • In Hong Kong the Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard also earns Status Points on spending.
  • Silver and higher members who hold a Cathay co-branded card get three days of priority access to Discounted Flight Awards.

Other ways to get Cathay Pacific Asia Miles status

Companion Gold card

In 2026 a Diamond member who earns 1,800 Status Points in the year is awarded a Gold companion card for one person, the only way to share Cathay status. From 2027 the complimentary Gold companion membership becomes a status benefit instead of a points milestone.

Diamond Membership Reserve (from 2027)

From 1 January 2027 members who have held Diamond for five or more years bank one complimentary Diamond year for every 6,000 Status Points earned since 2016, and the banked years do not expire. There is no separate lifetime tier.

No status match, challenge or purchase

Cathay does not publish a status match or challenge, and it does not sell status or Status Points. Asia Miles cannot be converted into Status Points or used to extend a status period.

Keeping Cathay Pacific Asia Miles status

  • You keep a tier by earning its Status Points again in the calendar year. The 2026 terms publish no soft landing: your status for the next period is set by the Status Points you actually earned.
  • Surplus points do roll over. In 2026 members who earn more than 600 Status Points carry the excess into the next year, capped at 50% of the threshold for the highest status reached: 300 for Gold and 600 for Diamond. From 2027 the caps are 300 for Gold, 600 for Diamond and 1,200 for Diamond Exec.
  • Mid-status benefits earned in 2026, such as lounge passes and Bookable Upgrades, stay valid for 12 months from issue after the 2027 changes take effect.
  • Asia Miles expire after 18 months without activity for every member, with no status exemption, but flying, card spending and partner earning all count as activity. See do airline miles expire.

How many Status Points do I need for Cathay Diamond?
1,200 Status Points in the calendar year. Silver needs 300, Gold 600 and Diamond Exec 2,400. Points come from Cathay and oneworld flights plus capped co-brand card spending.
What changes in the Cathay membership programme in 2027?
From 1 January 2027 Status Points accrue through the year without resetting after each upgrade, so you can climb more than one tier in a year. Diamond Exec becomes a formal tier, rollover caps become 300, 600 and 1,200, Upgrade Passes replace mid-status upgrade rewards, and the Diamond Membership Reserve banks free Diamond years for long-time members.
Do Cathay elites earn bonus Asia Miles?
No. Unlike most airline programmes, Cathay status carries no mileage bonus on Cathay or partner flights. Bonus miles come only from promotions.
Can I earn Cathay status on American Airlines or British Airways flights?
Yes. oneworld flights credited to Asia Miles earn Status Points on the fares Cathay designates as eligible. Award tickets on any airline earn none.
Does the US Cathay credit card earn Status Points?
Yes, 10 Status Points per US$5,000 spent in a month, up to 100 a calendar year. That is a third of the 300 needed for Silver, so flying has to do the rest.
Do Cathay Silver members get lounge access?
Yes, on Cathay-marketed and operated flights Silver members use Cathay Business Class lounges, without a guest. On other oneworld airlines Silver counts as oneworld Ruby, whose benefits are priority check-in and preferred seating, not lounges.
Does Cathay offer a status match?
