How do I join American Airlines AAdvantage?
Enroll online through the Join AAdvantage link on aa.com (aa.com/loyalty/enrollment/enroll) or in the American app. You get an AAdvantage number straight away and can add it to any existing trip from the Passenger information section of Find your trip.
Does it cost anything to join American Airlines AAdvantage?
Nothing. American says joining is quick and simple and you can sign up for free in minutes, and membership alone unlocks perks such as free AT&T-sponsored Wi-Fi on most domestic and select international flights.

Is there a minimum age to join American Airlines AAdvantage, and can children have their own account?
The AAdvantage terms set no minimum age, and they explicitly exempt members under 21 from the 24-month mileage expiry rule, so children can hold their own account; the 24-month clock only starts once they turn 21.
Where do I find my American Airlines AAdvantage membership number?
It is shown in your account summary when you log in to aa.com or the app. If you cannot find it, fill in the Need your AAdvantage number form on aa.com and American emails it to you.

How do I change the name on my American Airlines AAdvantage account after marriage or a legal name change?
Name changes cannot be processed over the phone. You submit a copy of the legal document (court order, marriage certificate, divorce certificate) by mail, or follow the identity-verification instructions on aa.com or in the app. American requires the name on your AAdvantage account to match the government-issued photo ID you travel with.
I accidentally created two American Airlines AAdvantage accounts. Can they be merged?
Yes. Log in to the account you want to keep and use the Merge your account request; American folds the other account into it. The terms only allow one AAdvantage membership per person, so do not leave two open.

How do I close my American Airlines AAdvantage account, and what happens to my miles?
Ask AAdvantage customer service to close the account. The terms say accrued miles, Loyalty Points and benefits are not the member's property and are not transferable on termination or cancellation, so any balance is forfeited when the account closes.
Can I join American Airlines AAdvantage if I live outside the airline's home country?
Yes. The terms set no residency requirement, American issues AAdvantage credit cards outside the U.S. (they earn Loyalty Points too), and it staffs reservations lines in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.
How do I update my email, address or phone number with American Airlines AAdvantage?
Log in to your account, go to profile / settings, select information and password, and update your details there. Name changes are the exception and need legal documentation.

What do I do if I am locked out of my American Airlines AAdvantage account?
Use the Need password? link on the aa.com login (aa.com/loyalty/needPasswordAccess) to reset it, or Need AAdvantage number? to retrieve your number; once in, you can change your username and password under your profile's information and password section. If the reset does not work, contact aa.com technical support. Passwords flagged as compromised on the web are rejected, so choose a new one.
If I join American Airlines AAdvantage after a flight, can I still claim miles for it?
Yes. American lets you request miles and Loyalty Points for past eligible flights up to 12 months from the flight date, and the rule is written around the activity date rather than your enrollment date, so join first and then file the missing-miles request online.
Does American Airlines have a separate program for small businesses, and can I earn in both?
Yes, AAdvantage Business. Registration is free with a tax ID, the company earns 1 mile per $1 of flown revenue and registered travelers earn an extra 1 Loyalty Point per $1 on top of their normal miles, once the business hits $5,000 in annual flown revenue with five travelers or holds a co-brand card. It is open in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

How are miles calculated on American Airlines flights: by fare paid, by distance, or by a fixed amount?
By fare paid. AAdvantage base miles are calculated on the ticket price (base fare plus mandatory carrier-imposed fees), not distance; government taxes and optional fees such as change or ticketing fees earn nothing. Miles earned on a paid flight also post one-for-one as Loyalty Points toward status.
How many miles do I earn per dollar (or per mile flown) on American Airlines?
Members earn 5 base miles for every U.S. dollar of ticket price (base fare plus carrier-imposed fees, excluding government taxes) on American-marketed flights. Status bonuses lift that to 7 miles per dollar for AAdvantage Gold (40% bonus), 8 for Platinum (60%), 9 for Platinum Pro (80%) and 11 for Executive Platinum (120%). See the earning page.

Do basic economy or light fares on American Airlines earn miles?
Not any more. Basic Economy tickets bought on or after 12:01 a.m. CT on December 17, 2025 earn no AAdvantage miles and no Loyalty Points; Basic Economy tickets bought before that date still earn 2 miles and 2 Loyalty Points per dollar.

What elite bonus do status members earn on American Airlines flights?
Status bonuses on American-marketed flights are 40% for AAdvantage Gold, 60% for Platinum, 80% for Platinum Pro and 120% for Executive Platinum, on top of the 5 base miles per dollar, so an Executive Platinum earns 11 miles per dollar. The bonus miles also count as Loyalty Points.

Do award tickets earn miles or status credit on American Airlines?
No. Award tickets are on American's list of ineligible ticket types, so a flight booked with miles earns neither AAdvantage miles nor Loyalty Points, whatever your status. Only the taxes and fees you pay on the award are money out, and they do not earn either.

Which American Airlines tickets earn no miles at all?
Award tickets, charters, companion tickets, infant tickets, free promotional tickets and bookings where the airline is undisclosed at purchase (Priceline, Hotwire and similar) earn nothing, and Basic Economy fares bought from December 17, 2025 earn nothing. Government-imposed taxes and fees never count toward the earning base either.

Do taxes, fees and surcharges on an American Airlines ticket earn miles?
No. The terms say base miles accrue on the base fare plus mandatory carrier-imposed fees only; government-imposed taxes and fees and optional airline fees (change fees, ticketing fees and the like) do not earn miles.
If I upgrade a ticket on American Airlines, do I earn miles on the original fare or the upgraded cabin?
On the original fare. The terms state that miles and Loyalty Points accrue based on the usual rules for the ticket prior to the upgrade, so upgrading (with miles, a systemwide upgrade or a complimentary upgrade) does not change what you earn.
Do infant or child tickets on American Airlines earn miles?
Infant tickets (a lap infant fare) are listed among the ticket types that earn no AAdvantage miles. A child with a purchased seat on a normal fare earns like any other passenger, provided the child has their own AAdvantage account on the booking.

Do group bookings, tour packages or charter flights on American Airlines earn miles?
Group tickets do: American's Group & Meeting Travel terms say AAdvantage members may accrue mileage on Group & Meeting Travel contracts (groups of 10 or more), and AAdvantage upgrades are allowed after ticketing. Charter flights are on American's list of tickets that earn nothing, as are tickets bought through opaque sites where the airline is not disclosed.
Do employee, industry or heavily discounted fares on American Airlines earn miles?
Industry fares do not: American's earning page lists travel agency and industry reduced-rate tickets, other free or reduced-rate ticket promotions and tickets issued subject to special provisions among the ticket types that earn no miles, whatever the booking code. Promo-code and corporate-discount fares earn on the base fare actually paid (including carrier-imposed surcharges) less the discount, and American's special fares page says bulk and consolidator fares earn a percentage of the distance flown set by the booking code. Basic Economy tickets bought from December 17, 2025 earn nothing.

Yes, in a form: the AAdvantage status and rewards estimator on the Loyalty Points and status page takes your monthly airline spend, current status, monthly credit card spend and monthly partner miles and projects your status tier and Loyalty Point Rewards level for the qualification year. It is illustrative only and assumes 5 base miles per dollar on flights plus your status bonus, so for a single trip multiply the fare (excluding government taxes) by 5 to 11 depending on tier.

How are miles calculated on partner airline flights credited to American Airlines AAdvantage?
It depends on the partner. Distance-based partners such as Qantas, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways and Alaska pay a percentage of miles flown by booking class (100% for full economy, 25% to 50% for deep-discount fares) plus a cabin bonus of up to 200% in first. Fare-based partners such as British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, LEVEL and JetSMART pay 5 miles per U.S. dollar of ticket price, the same as American.
Which booking classes on partner airlines earn miles in American Airlines AAdvantage, and which earn nothing?
Each partner page has its own chart. Examples: on Cathay Pacific Y earns 100%, B and H 75%, and K, M, L, V, Q, S, G and N earn 0% with no Loyalty Points; on Alaska the X Basic Economy code earns 0%; on Aer Lingus any booking code not in the table earns nothing and Saver fares bought from December 17, 2025 earn nothing.
Do partner airline flights count toward elite status in American Airlines AAdvantage?
Yes. Base miles earned on oneworld and eligible partner flights post as Loyalty Points, so Qantas, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and the rest count toward AAdvantage status just like American flights.
Does it matter whether a partner flight is ticketed by American Airlines or by the partner for American Airlines AAdvantage earning?
Yes. Flights marketed by American earn on the ticket price (5 miles per dollar plus your status bonus) regardless of who operates them, while flights ticketed under the partner's own code earn from that partner's distance or fare chart by booking class.

My flight was credited to the wrong program. Can American Airlines AAdvantage move the miles?
No. American's terms say mileage you accumulate in another loyalty program cannot be transferred into AAdvantage unless American expressly says otherwise, and the AAdvantage FAQ says you can only be rewarded for a trip in one loyalty program at a time.
Will American Airlines AAdvantage credit a flight if the name on the ticket does not exactly match my account?
American expects the name and date of birth on the reservation to match your AAdvantage account exactly and audits for it; where they differ, miles can be held back until the discrepancy is resolved to American's satisfaction. Fix the profile name (with legal documents if it is a name change) before claiming.

Loyalty Points are the sole status metric, so card spend alone can qualify you.

Can I transfer miles back out of American Airlines AAdvantage to a bank program?
No. The terms say that unless American expressly states otherwise, miles and Loyalty Points cannot be transferred out of AAdvantage to any other loyalty program.
Do American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards have annual fees, and what perks offset them?
All but the MileUp card, which has no annual fee. As of 2026 the Platinum Select and the AAdvantage Business card are $0 the first year then $99, the Globe is $350 (with four Admirals Club Globe passes a year and a $120 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit every 4 years) and the Executive World Legend is $695 with full Admirals Club membership.

Can I buy miles from American Airlines AAdvantage, at what price, and is there a yearly cap?
Yes, on aa.com. Purchased miles cost from 2.3 to 3.5 cents each depending on how many you buy (gifted miles are priced the same, and moving miles to another member costs half a cent per mile), up to 300,000 bought or gifted per calendar year. They usually post straight away, cannot be refunded or reversed, and never earn Loyalty Points.

Yes, at times: American's buy, gift and transfer FAQ says the 300,000-mile yearly cap on buying and gifting miles is subject to change during promotional periods. Can I gift miles to another American Airlines AAdvantage member?
Yes, through the paid Gift Miles transaction on aa.com; it is one of the only permitted ways to move miles to another member. Gifted miles are bonus miles and do not earn Loyalty Points for the recipient.

Yes, AT&T wireless, as of September 2026: AAdvantage members earn 25,000 bonus miles per line when they switch wireless lines to AT&T and activate a smartphone on a postpaid voice and data plan, for up to 10 lines per account and 2 accounts, until 9 p.m. PT on September 30, 2026. Four published tiers: AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum, plus the invitation-only ConciergeKey and lifetime Million Miler recognition.
How do I qualify for elite status in American Airlines AAdvantage: by spending, segments, distance or points?
Purely by Loyalty Points. You earn them one-for-one with eligible AAdvantage miles whenever you fly, use an AAdvantage credit card or earn miles with partners, and your tier is set by the Loyalty Points earned in the 12-month period starting March 1; there are no separate segment, distance or spend requirements beside the four Loyalty Point thresholds.
What are the qualification thresholds for each American Airlines AAdvantage tier?
As of 2026: 40,000 Loyalty Points for AAdvantage Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum, earned during the 12-month period starting March 1 each year. Status runs from the day you reach it through March 31 of the following full year.

How many miles does an upgrade cost in American Airlines AAdvantage, and is there a cash copay?
There is no fixed price any more. American's terms say it formerly offered upgrades for miles plus, where applicable, a cash co-payment at a static rate, but it stopped accepting new Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards after August 11, 2025; ones requested by then are honored, and changing one cancels it without refunding the co-payment. On American, upgrading with miles now means an Instant Upgrade, which American's using-miles FAQ says is offered when an upgrade-eligible seat is available, on flights operated by American or American Eagle and tickets bought directly from American in the 50 U.S. states, up to 24 hours before departure.
Can I use miles to upgrade partner airline flights through American Airlines AAdvantage?
Only British Airways, and only with systemwide upgrades on transatlantic BA flights on eligible published fares; on BA aircraft with premium economy an economy upgrade lands in premium economy. Mileage upgrades are for American and American Eagle flights only.

Who owns American Airlines AAdvantage miles: the member or the airline?
American Airlines does. The terms state that accrued AAdvantage miles and benefits do not constitute property of the member, carry no residual property rights and are not transferable, and that accumulating them gives you no vested rights.
Do the American Airlines AAdvantage terms prohibit selling or bartering miles?
Yes. The terms say you may not at any time purchase, transfer, sell, advertise for sale or barter AAdvantage miles, awards or benefits, including by transferring, gifting or promising them, except through American's own Buy, Gift and Transfer Miles transactions and AAdvantage Business. Award tickets have no cash value and are non-transferable.
What can American Airlines AAdvantage do if it finds miles were sold or awards were bought?
The terms allow forfeiture of all miles and benefits in the account including existing redemptions, termination of the account and of future participation, and award tickets acquired for consideration may be cancelled, confiscated or the passenger denied boarding. American also says violators may be liable for damages and litigation costs including its attorneys' fees.
Does American Airlines AAdvantage audit accounts, and what triggers a review?
Yes. American reserves the right to audit any account at any time, with or without notice, for compliance with the terms and Conditions of Carriage, including checking that the name and date of birth on a reservation match the AAdvantage account. While discrepancies are being resolved, miles and benefits can be delayed and the member can be blocked from accessing the account.
Is it against the American Airlines AAdvantage rules to book an award for someone who pays me for it?
Yes. You may book an award in anyone's name, but the terms prohibit selling or bartering awards for any consideration, and a ticket acquired by purchase can be cancelled or confiscated and the passenger denied boarding, with the member's account subject to forfeiture and termination.

Amended terms are posted on aa.com and continued participation counts as acceptance; the terms do not promise individual notice of rule changes. Mileage summaries and redemption receipts go to your registered email, and account-summary subscribers get a monthly summary as long as the account had activity in the prior three years. American also keeps a running program-updates page.
What changed most recently in how American Airlines AAdvantage elite status is earned?
Basic Economy tickets bought from 12:00 a.m. on December 17, 2025 no longer earn Loyalty Points, so they cannot help you qualify. The thresholds themselves are unchanged, and from March 1, 2026 the Loyalty Point Rewards you unlock along the way were reshuffled.
