JAL Mileage Bank elite status explained

JAL runs two status systems side by side. FLY ON status (JMB Crystal, JMB Sapphire, JGC Premier and JMB Diamond) is earned each calendar year from FLY ON Points or a count of flights on JAL and oneworld airlines, and needs at least 30,000 FLY ON Points for the first tier.

The JAL Global Club (JGC) is a long-term membership instead. Since the Life Status Program launched in January 2024, it is unlocked by 1,500 Life Status Points, which build up over your whole membership and never expire, and it is kept for as long as you hold a qualifying JALCARD.

Neither counts your redeemable JAL miles, which are a separate balance used for award tickets and upgrades.

A separate counter that decides your tier. You cannot spend it on flights or rewards.

JAL Mileage Bank miles are what you spend: award tickets, upgrade awards, lounge coupons and more. A flight earns miles as the sector mileage times the fare's accrual rate, for example 100% on international Y and B fares, 125% on Business J, C, D and I, and 150% on First. Miles expire after 36 months unless you are Diamond or JGC Premier.

FLY ON Points are a status counter only. They start from the same flight mileage, multiply it by 2 on domestic Japan flights, 1.5 on JAL flights to Asia, Oceania and Vladivostok and 1 elsewhere, then add a fare bonus (400 points on domestic Flex fares, 200 on Saver fares). They cannot be spent, bought or transferred and reset every January.

Life Status Points are the third tally, for JGC. A domestic JAL Group flight earns 5 LSP and international flying earns 5 LSP per 1,000 sector miles, and JALCARD spending, JAL Pay and JAL Mall shopping earn them too.

Worked example: a domestic JAL flight with a sector mileage of 500 miles on an Economy Flex fare (100% accrual) earns 500 redeemable miles, 1,400 FLY ON Points (500 x 2 plus the 400-point Flex bonus), one qualifying flight and 5 Life Status Points. A JMB Sapphire on the same flight also gets a 105% Mile-Up Bonus, 525 more redeemable miles, but no extra FLY ON Points.

FLY ON Points and flights are counted from January to December and reset each year. Booking benefits start soon after you qualify, some Diamond and JGC Premier services start on 1 April of the following year, and status lasts until 31 March of the second year after the qualification year, so status earned during 2026 runs to 31 March 2028. Life Status Points never reset.

Benefits of each JAL Mileage Bank tier

JMB Crystal

Earn 30,000 FLY ON Points in a calendar year, at least 15,000 of them on JAL Group flights, or fly 30 flights (at least 15 on JAL Group) and earn 10,000 FLY ON Points. JGC members who reach this level are JGC Crystal, recognised as oneworld Sapphire.

JMB Sapphire

Earn 50,000 FLY ON Points in a calendar year, at least 25,000 on JAL Group flights, or fly 50 flights (at least 25 on JAL Group) and earn 15,000 FLY ON Points.

Only JAL Global Club members can reach it: earn 80,000 FLY ON Points in a calendar year, at least 40,000 on JAL Group flights, or fly 80 flights (at least 40 on JAL Group) and earn 25,000 FLY ON Points.

JMB Diamond

Earn 100,000 FLY ON Points in a calendar year, at least 50,000 on JAL Group flights, or fly 120 flights (at least 60 on JAL Group) and earn 35,000 FLY ON Points. Diamonds who earn 150,000 FLY ON Points on JAL Group flights, or fly 180 JAL Group flights and earn 50,000 JAL Group FLY ON Points, also get Diamond Metal extras on domestic Class J.

  • JAL First Class Lounge and Diamond Premier Lounge access with one companion free, and up to four people with lounge coupons
  • Mile-Up Bonus of 130%, the highest in the program
  • Mileage expiry suspended while you hold the status

How flights earn FOP

  • Only JAL Group flights (JAL, Japan Transocean Air, Ryukyu Air Commuter) and flights on oneworld airlines such as American Airlines, British Airways and Qantas earn FLY ON Points and qualifying flights. Miles from non-oneworld partner airlines, card spending, shopping, hotels and promotions never count toward FLY ON status.
  • Every tier sets a JAL Group minimum, typically half the total. A traveller who earns 50,000 FLY ON Points mostly on American Airlines still needs 25,000 of them on JAL Group flights for Sapphire.
  • Domestic Japan flying earns FLY ON Points fastest because of the x2 multiplier and the per-flight fare bonus, which is why the flight-count route exists: 30, 50, 80 or 120 flights plus a smaller FLY ON Point floor.
  • Life Status Points for JGC come from JAL Group flights (5 per domestic flight, 5 per 1,000 international sector miles) and lifestyle services: 5 LSP per 2,000 miles earned on a JALCARD, 1 LSP per 400 JAL Pay miles and 1 per 100 JAL Mall miles.

How many miles each tier earns

  • Every tier earns the same base flight miles for the fare, then a Mile-Up Bonus: 55% for Crystal, 105% for Sapphire and JGC Premier, and 130% for Diamond. JAL Global Club members without FLY ON status get 35% if they hold a JALCARD CLUB-A card or higher.
  • The bonus applies on JAL Group flights and on American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Malaysia Airlines between Japan and Malaysia, and Garuda Indonesia between Japan and Indonesia. Other oneworld flights earn base miles only.
  • Award tickets earn no flight miles and no FLY ON Points at any tier.

Upgrades for JAL Mileage Bank elites

  • JAL gives no complimentary upgrades at any FLY ON tier. Upgrades are bought with miles through International Upgrade Awards on JAL-operated international flights only.
  • One-way from Japan, Economy to Business costs 30,000 miles to North America, 33,000 to Europe, 20,000 to Southeast Asia and 12,000 to East Asia; Economy to Premium Economy is 20,000 miles to North America or Europe. Only fares in eligible booking classes qualify (W, R, Y, B, H or K for an upgrade to Business), and award tickets, codeshares and discounted group fares are excluded.
  • Status helps through the waitlist: every tier from Crystal up has priority waitlisting, and JMB Diamond members have a designated number of miles returned after redeeming International Upgrade Awards on eligible routes.

Credit cards that help with JAL Mileage Bank status

  • No credit card earns FLY ON Points; FLY ON status comes from flying JAL and oneworld only.
  • JALCARD spending does build Life Status Points, 5 for every 2,000 card miles, and a qualifying JALCARD is required to join and keep JAL Global Club: the CLUB-A Card (JPY11,000 a year for the primary member), CLUB-A Gold Card (JPY17,600 to JPY20,900), JAL Diners Card (JPY34,100), Platinum or Platinum Pro Card (JPY77,000 for Platinum Pro).
  • The same cards unlock JMB elite at 250 Life Status Points and JMB elite plus at 500, for primary cardholders who apply. JAL's qualification pages list no US-issued card for any of these.

Other ways to get JAL Mileage Bank status

JAL Global Club (lifetime-style status)

Earn 1,500 Life Status Points and hold an eligible JALCARD to join JGC, which gives oneworld Sapphire, Sakura Lounge access and extra baggage for as long as you keep the card. If you leave, JAL says re-enrolment will need another 100 Life Status Points, though that rule is not yet enforced. JAL: JGC qualification

Marriott Bonvoy status link

Since 14 July 2026, linked Marriott Bonvoy elites receive FLY ON Points every year: 5,000 for Silver, 10,000 Gold, 20,000 Platinum, 30,000 Titanium and 40,000 Ambassador. In the other direction Sapphire gets Marriott Silver Elite, and JGC Premier and Diamond get Gold Elite. JAL: Marriott Bonvoy status

Partner Status gift from a Diamond or JGC Premier

The 2026 Service Selection menu lets a Diamond or JGC Premier extend FLY ON status services to one designated partner from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, if the member held JGC membership on 31 January 2026. No lower tier can share status.

Family members of JGC

JGC family members receive Three Star services and benefits whatever their own Life Status Points balance.

Status match from other airlines

JAL publishes no status match or challenge for elites of other airlines, and FLY ON Points cannot be bought for cash.

Keeping JAL Mileage Bank status

  • FLY ON Points do not roll over: they reset to zero every January and you must requalify each calendar year. Because status runs until 31 March of the second year, a missed year still leaves you the status through that March.
  • JAL Global Club does not need requalifying. Life Status Points accumulate for life and do not expire, and JGC stays active while you hold an eligible JALCARD.
  • Diamond and JGC Premier members keep their miles from expiring while they hold the tier; everyone else is back on the 36-month expiry.

How many FLY ON Points do I need for JAL Sapphire?
You need 50,000 FLY ON Points in a calendar year, with at least 25,000 on JAL Group flights. Alternatively fly 50 flights, at least 25 on JAL Group, and earn 15,000 FLY ON Points. Sapphire gives oneworld Sapphire status, so it works for lounges on American, British Airways and other oneworld airlines.
What is the difference between JAL Diamond and JGC Premier?
Both are oneworld Emerald with First Class Lounge access and suspended mileage expiry. JGC Premier is open only to JAL Global Club members and needs 80,000 FLY ON Points, while JMB Diamond needs 100,000. Diamond earns a 130% Mile-Up Bonus against 105% for JGC Premier.
How do I join the JAL Global Club now?
Earn 1,500 Life Status Points and hold an eligible JALCARD, such as the CLUB-A Card. A domestic JAL flight earns 5 LSP and international flying earns 5 LSP per 1,000 sector miles, and LSP never expire.
Do flights on American Airlines count toward JAL status?
Yes. All oneworld airlines earn FLY ON Points and qualifying flights, but each tier needs about half its total on JAL Group flights. American Airlines is also one of the partners where the Mile-Up Bonus is paid.
Does JAL status give free upgrades?
No. No FLY ON tier includes complimentary upgrades. You can upgrade JAL-operated international flights with miles, for example 30,000 miles one way from Japan to North America from Economy to Business on an eligible fare.
Is JMB Crystal worth it?
Crystal gives a 55% Mile-Up Bonus, priority check-in, an extra checked bag on international flights and priority waitlisting. It maps to oneworld Ruby and includes no free lounge access, so Sapphire at 50,000 FLY ON Points is the level that unlocks lounges.
