How to earn JAL Mileage Bank miles

Flight mileage equals sector mileage times an accumulation rate. International JAL flights: First F and A 150%, business J, C, D and I 125%, premium economy W and R 100%, economy Y and B 100%, H, K and M 70%, L, V and S 50%, O, Z, G, Q and N 30%. Domestic fares earn 50% to 150%.

How to join JAL Mileage Bank

Enrol at jal.co.jp. What the program requires and offers:

  • No registration or annual fee. A children's option covers ages 12 and under.
  • Your regional programme follows the country of your registered address. Physical cards stopped being issued on 4 August 2025.
  • Infants under 2 (international) or 3 (domestic) without a seat cannot earn. No welcome bonus stated.

    JAL-marketed flights earn a percentage of distance by fare class from AA's JAL chart. A good choice for Americans, since AAdvantage books JAL awards.

  • British Airways Club

    25% to 300% of distance by booking class, the highest ceiling of any BA partner.

  • Alaska Atmos Rewards

    Distance and fare class; claims within 12 months.

  • Emirates Skywards

    Up to 1.5 Skywards Miles per mile flown: domestic First 150%, J 110%, Y 100%; international 30% to 150%.

  • Korean Air SKYPASS

    Only Korea to Japan flights earn.

Which program should I select for JAL flights?

JAL business or first: British Airways at up to 300% or JAL itself at 125% to 150% of distance. Tokyo to New York (6,740 miles) in business earns 8,425 JAL miles, or up to about 20,000 Avios in BA's top booking class.

Discount economy: JAL's own rates drop to 30% on O, Z, G, Q and N, and partners usually mirror that. AAdvantage or Alaska are the practical choice for US-based flyers because the miles are easier to use and to keep alive.

JAL miles expire 36 months after the month they were earned regardless of activity, so credit here only if you will redeem within three years.

Claiming miles after the flight

Claim window: 6 months from the flight.

  • Request post-flight credit online; domestic requests open three days after the flight.
  • Flights flown before joining JMB are accepted if claimed within six months (bonus miles excluded).
  • Partner flights need the ticket number and boarding pass.

WAON e-money earns 1 mile per JPY200, and the JALCARD 2 miles per JPY200 at designated stores.

Booking awards with the miles

Booking window: 360 days, from midnight Japan time; website bookings close 48 hours before departure. Change fee: International JAL awards cannot be changed (cancel and rebook); partner awards allow date and flight changes. Cancellation: JPY 3,100 international and partner; JPY 1,000 domestic. Do JAL miles expire?
Yes, on the last day of the 36th month after the month of the transaction, with no extension for activity.
Can I claim JAL miles for a flight before I joined?
Yes, if the post-flight credit request is made within six months of the flight; bonus miles are excluded.
